Hi Guys,

I'm pretty novice when it comes to Macs, especially licensing etc, so confused with this. Done a bit of googling and am more confused!

A friend has a Mac Mini (1.66Ghz) running 10.4. He's seen the new Magic Mouse and wants one, they do look nice! It is only supported in 10.5 or 10.6 though.

Can he just buy the cheaper 10.6 package or does he have to the "box set". Apple.com would lead you to believe the box set. Reading some forum posts and wiki etc though kind of leads me to think not, is this right? Does he really need to spend over £100 on the box set?

Thanks,
Michelle

Apparently it will work.

In fairness, the other bits you get in the boxed set are nice and are useful but if he doesn't want them then he doesn't have to. Also if he bought Snow Leopard on its own and it didn't work... he could just take it back and say it didn't work. They'd let him.

I'll be aiming to buy it online - easier than fathing getting to the shops, so a definite yes or no would be appreciated!

Cheers

There is only one version of Snow Leopard, they're all the same, guaranteed.

Erm - Apple.com store has 2. The "normal" and "box set".

Taken from http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html :
Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.

If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, just purchase Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and follow the simple installation instructions.

Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.

If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, purchase the Mac Box Set, which is a single, affordable package that includes Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard; iLife ’09, with the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD; and iWork ’09, Apple’s productivity suite for home and office including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

Struggling to find a reason why they say that along with comments I've seen else where. I want to make sure there isn't some techy reason and it's just them making more money! ;)

Thanks,
Shell

There is only one version of Snow Leopard. It's the same whether you buy the upgrade for Leopard or the upgrade from Tiger. Each time it does the same thing, an archive and install. Seriously, it's the same thing, they're relying on honesty. Whatever you buy will upgrade from Tiger or Leopard and equally, each one will install onto a blank hard drive.

Sweet. Cheers. A case of them being money grabbing whatsits!

What ground do they have to put what I quoted from their website?!

They have every right, the £25 upgrade is for Leopard and the licence shipped with it is for an upgrade only. Technically if you buy the cheap one and upgrade from Tiger, you're not licenced.
