Anyone else on here been trying out the alpha for this game, only been playing a few days but i'm absolutely loving it, seems a lot more dynamic than other city/town building games.

Still in alpha so the game isn't perfect yet and lots more content yet to be introduced into the game but looks to have great potential.

Some video footage for those who don't know the game:

It's a one man team developing in his spare time. Honestly, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole until released, that's if it's released actually finished...cough... cough... Banished....cough... cough.

Haha yeah that is always a risk I guess, particularly as so many games have failed to live up to expectations recently. However, for a first alpha release it seems pretty smooth and stable to me and quite playable :-)

What was wrong with Banished? I don't think I played it long enough, or my village died / I did a crap job.

Banished is great but as others have said development seems to have slowed right down. I also much prefer the no grid, free placement mechanics of Ostriv, gives the town a much more natural feel to them.

I was looking for an Ostriv dedicated forum at Steam but apparently that has not been 'settled' yet. It comes with a nice but brief readme, a lot of questions remain. I managed to keep my citizens from seeking their luck elsewhere during the winter ( i was actually waiting for them to go skating... ), got the food going and even have new settlers coming in at regular basis. Up to 120 inhabitants sofar. But now they start whining about having no money....

@ Evoloz: do you experience that too and if so found out what the best way is to remedy ? I do have a town hall so i can probabely regulate economics but haven't tried that yet. I could f.i. upgrade wages or lower rent but balance is already in the red... No money to visit the other towns anymore neither...

Btw, i really love this game, even if it's in Alpha stage. The love that the dev has for his brainchild shines thru in every detail, and there's LOTS of that already !

Btw(2), what's up with the Sopranos around here ??....

cheers,
jan

Will there be an execution square (I've been watching too much Gunpowder...)?!

One man games can work but may get caught up in development hell particularly if the person gets distracted by real life and there's no driving force behind them (i.e. executive oversight).

It's an established theme of OCUK, goes back long before even I joined. Presumably at one point the owner(s) of the shop/forum were huge gangster film fans and decided to use that rather than have people upload their own avatars. It can be quite fun guessing the more obscure ones, even now there's a few I haven't got a clue (like the one where the guy is wearing a trilby with his fingers clasped under his chin).

Not if i can help it ! Already have a problem bringing my cows to the slaughterhouse. Hope i can raise my people to be vegetarians.

He seems very dedicated and determined to finish up his brainchild.

Looks like Steve Buscemi to me ( Boardwalk Empire) Ok, thanks for the explanation. Funny.... hehe

Yeah since it still alpha its not really fully available on steam yet, I think its just classed as green light but not available. Yes the game is certainly a bit lacking on tutorial/ instructions but then I guess it is alpha 1 i'm sure they'll be a better tutorial before its released.

The finances are a little tough to manage I find, yeah you can increases wages and lower rent to increase the wealth of your citizens. But as you say you then run out of money as the government. I find dedicating a whole farm to growing sunflowers, to convert into oil and then selling via trade a good way to bring in money, you can then afford to pay your citizens more, lower rent etc.

Well, after 5 times in a row seeing my poor half-starving citizens leaving my village in decay i think i've got the message. One time as much as 150 of 'em... I just didn't take any notice of the running number there at the top of screen so exporting/selling anything was not at hand. That's a whole lot better now. I think i've also found a good building sequence. Current village upto 120 inhabitants again but this time i have economics in order. Bit of trouble with sunflower fields. They seem to only work for one year... Not sure how to deal with that yet.

Btw, do you have any chicken, pigs for your farm already ? I suppose, like cows, they will be available in the other towns sometime ?... (maybe not implemented yet ?..)

Still love it a lot although citizens out of money while there's plenty of jobs around is a bit annoying. We deffinately need an employment office..

Yes it can be a bit of a hand full at first getting started and getting a strong economy going, took me a few attempts to get it. As for sunflowers they are very ground intensive so after growing for a year you will need to let the field be fallow/ empty for a year. I have one farm with 4 fields two growing and two fallow each year.

Yes hopefully thinks like citizen behavior and AI will improve as the game develops further.

I have the same problem in Skyrim... cold blooded killer when it comes to bandits and rogue mages but can't bring myself to ping poor old Bambi for some crafting leather!

My gangster fu is poor, after showing my missus, even she got that one!
