OSX paradox - why does this happen?!

Ok guys, I'm literally tearing my hair out now. It seems like I have found a way to create a password bug in OSX Lion. Try the following:

• Go to System Preferences > Sharing
• Select a folder of your choice to share
• Click + User
• Click New Person then type a user name, ie 'milkman' then password ie 'bottle' > create account. Double click to add account to share
• Click 'options' button. Try to tick the newly made account. The prompt asks for the password - the password just specified does not work!!

What the?!

Someone please save my sanity?!?!

Steve

Are you sure it's not asking for the password of the user you are currently using (i.e. for escalating the privileges in order to be able to make the change) rather than the 'bottle' password you have just defined?

(disclaimer, I'm not currently in front of a Mac so can't try and see the problem)

I don't believe so, as the Admin account I am working from currently has no password set, and entering no password prompts a 'wrong password' failure.

Even stranger is the fact that if you go back to the 'user and groups' section and change the password to another then return to sharing > options, the new password will not work either. Yet if you start from scratch and create a new user from the user and groups section directly (rather than through the mini dialogue box in the sharing section) everything works as expected! *confused!*

It's because of that. A admin account needs a password for some stuff to be escalated I think. Well I know my friend had this problem. Something like a app wouldn't install as it wanted escalating and even with no password it wasn't working till he changed it to have a password.

Sounds like a good lead! thanks so much for helping - I will give this a try tomorrow, burned out from 4hours of fiddling now!

Thanks again, will report back...

Nope, the dialogue clearly asks for the password of the user you want to enable.

It's because of that.
No, it's not. :p While that is a feature to protect people who've set up admin accounts with no password, it's not causing the problem here.

Yup, looks like a bug when the user is being created in the sharing section. I've just recreated the problem and had no problems when creating a new user properly :)
