OSX Yosemite Download, where from?

A bit of an update, I can boot into Disc Utility and I've tried re-installing from there, but when we input the Apple ID details it says the service can't be reached at the moment. Wifi is working from within Disk Utility too.

I've tried to get Yosemite on a different Mac but only El Capitan is available.

Any particular reason why you want Yosemite over El Capitan?

Is this reinstall to save files/pictures/documents on the Mac, as in a repair? Or a fresh install?

Yes, the re-install is to repair and save the files on the disc. It had been away for a new hard drive to a local Mac technician and came with Yosemite. Was previously on Snow Leopard.

Interestingly I spoke to Apply Support last night and they explained the reason for the error when signing into the App store, there was no Yosemite install associated with the account so it was not possible to re-install. They suggested a fresh install of SL, then upgrading though the App Store. The downside is everything on the disc would be lost.
Not great, hoping she has a Time Machine backup on an external disc somewhere!

Best plan would be to do a fresh install from another machine onto an external USB drive. That way you can boot her laptop from the external install.

You can then go about cloning/backing up her original hard drive to another one. Once it's cloned you can wipe the drive, clone over the fresh external install, set up her user account and transfer her home folder back across.

There are other alternative ways to do it too. One option might be to fresh install on an external, then physically switch the hard drives. That way her original hard drive becomes an external that you can read, and you have a fresh install. Then all you have to do is create her account and copy/clone across the home folder.
