Is it just me, or is photography one of those things where people are totally and utterly obnoxious to one another?

I struggle to understand why, its happened to me a few times and other people I know, there doesn't seem to be any other hobby where people get at each others throats for the stupidest of things, except for maybe unlicensed dog fighting or something lol.

I went to a popular place at the weekend and a bloke decided wherever he pointed his camera along a 150yd stretch of lakeside, was ruining his shot and decided to remedy the situation by screaming abuse at me, for which I told him to "get to ****"

Just seems like weird behaviour photographers seem to have, I've witnessed it a few times with other people, I felt like kicking him in the lake tbh.

Anyone else totally ruined someone's day and been on the end of a barrage of abuse, by daring to exist in the same dimension as somebody else taking a picture?

Not really came across anything like that to be honest.

Usually if I bump into a fellow tog we'll both exchange a polite hello or occasionally strike up a conversation while we're both waiting for stuff to happen etc.

I remember one occasion when I was up at Rannoch Moor shooting a popular location and there were quite a few togs 'jostling' for position but there were no arguments at all - everyone was very patient.

Going by your post and the fact you've mentioned it's quite widespread I'm quite glad I've not experienced anything like that before!

Sounds like just bad luck to be honest.

Most others that I've encountered have been better than reasonable, and are often willing to exchange ideas, settings info etc.

The following traits are all positively correlated amongst photographers:

Age; size of lens; size of beard; amount of camo gear worn; being a grumpy ********; inability to use Photoshop.

On top of the inability to use Photoshop is the ability to look down on anyone who does use it because it is "cheating"

A hi percentage photographers are up there own arse it's a case of little knowledge is dangerous no referring too any people here of course :D

I've not come across any one rude yet, I have only come across rude Joe public who takes offence of me shooting birds because they're in the background. I do however notice the, my lens is bigger than yours... damn right kind of look from fellow photog when I was out in the far east gallivanting.
I just found it hilarious as I am using a 4/3 system thus everything is 'smaller' but at least I don't have to travel around with a backpack so big to fit their 'big lens' (which can easily be used to compensate something they feel is too small :p)

See, the complete opposite has happened to me, other photographers have always been really nice. Good banter, there was this one bloke, he was just soooooo friendly (which isn't what you'd expect when he was 60 and i'm 17!)

Age;Getting older size of lens;Planning on getting 500mm f4 size of beard; Getting longer amount of camo gear worn; Have nearly full Realtree outfit being a grumpy ********; Depends who I'm talking to inability to use Photoshop. Planning on becoming an Adobe Certified Expert, so I'm safe there

I fail on one of the six points. Does that mean obnoxious tog? :(:p

I have not had any experiences like that myself, usually as others have sad the odd 'nod' to say hello.

Although ... I was out shooting with a mate once, and was subjected to a moment of arrogance from a fellow photographer. Basically, my friend had composed his shot on a tripod of some church. Admittedly, he was shooting into the sun, but that was his intention. Anyway, we saw this old guy, who I am not joking was covered in Canon 5D MkII advertising. I mean, the camera strap actually said what camera he had in massive letters. In addition, he had this massive bag which actually had Canon 5D MkII on that too?!? Additionally, he had badges sewn onto his clothes advertising. He was with his wife (they were about 60). Anyway, he came up behind my friend, looked at what we was shooting at, looked at me and then shook his head in a disapproving way, tutted and walked off. I felt like beating him to death with my plastic Holga.

What I hate above all else, is arrogance from someone who has better kit. Where does this level of spitefulness come from? Do they really think that they are a better photographer?

I'd have to admit that there are a fair few times that I have looked at what someone is taking a photo of and thought - you know, they're going to get home with that and think to themselves - why did I bother. But everyone has to start somewhere and some people see things in compositions that I would never have thought of.

Oh and I also get a bit of a chuckle out of train spotters... They're such a brilliant stereotype - you've gotta love them :D

I used to sit on trains in the station looking at train spotters taking pictures of it, and thought they were a strange breed.

But, standing up on the hillside at Cad-West with all the other folks, waiting for planes to come through, I realised that we weren't all that different!! :D

I can't remember meeting anybody particularly obnoxious when out and about, but it always amuses me when you meet fellow photographers and you watch some of them eyeing up your kit, just to see where they sit in comparison. It's all a bit weird really.

I had a situation shooting some motorsport. Was at Snetterton, and there isn't many places to get good shots, so everyone and there dog were all by the same bend. I had a good spot when a guy with a huge cannon of a lens squeezed in between me and someone else, and then decided to pan every shot nearly hitting me and the guy next to him. He moved on after one race and didn't even apologise.

I guess I'm just unlucky then :(

Trainspotters? round here we have "Bus Spotters" and no - I'm not making that up, you get crowds of them up at the Christmas market, they were even featured in the paper once..

Serious?
Is Lincoln that boring that buses have become some kind of collectors oddity?

Went to Blackpool on Sat (October 1st) and whilst waiting for a tram, met a couple of guys who were real tram spotters. They were waiting for the "rarest trams in the world" which is 3 x 2 car sets that Blackpool only get out for 3 weeks of the year, beginning 1st October and are being retired after this years outings as they modernise the tram network. Although exceedingly sad (they admitted as much) they were real nice guys but they really made me chuckle. Self deprecation is great in my book and helps things along.....
Anyway, just to add that kit envy does happen, but generally I only meet decent people...bad luck that some meet ar**ho***

I suffer from lens envy :( :p

I've only really met a couple of the pro photographers from the local paper here and one I've known for years always is fine to chat with, the other we had a conversation about how stupidly good his pictures of the football were at high iso / fast shutter speeds in comparison to mere mortals cameras!

Haven't really been out and about and seen anyone else taking pictures of anything. might change next weekend though when I'm in Edinburger (weather permitting of course). Planning on taking a few panoramas from Arthurs Seat so i can try out the new filters i bought a fortnight ago :)

I had a supposed professional photographer get narky with me a while back. It was the Lincolnshire horse trials, not exactly Burghley, there was hardly anyone there, me and the girlffriend both had our cameras and were taking pics as you do, purely for our own enjoyment. Then this woman comes up to us and starts asking us what we are doing. At first we thought she was being friendly, but then she starts asking us who we are and a really snide way. We start getting a bit puzzled what she is going on about then she states that she is the course photographer and has paid for the right to take official course photos and flatly acuses us of muscling in on her terriroty. She says just because we have "decent" cameras we must be freelancers out to deprive her of business. Even though I assure her it is just a hobby for us she then proceeds to make sure she stands in my line of shot whenever a horse comes past, until we have to move on. It was the way she appeared friendly at first which really hacked me off. It completely spoiled my girlfriends day too as from that point she didn't take a single photograph thinking this woman would somehow set the cops on us or something. Just goes to show photography is not immune to the presence of <rude word>
