Other than you, who do you know that buys blu ray/UHD media

Two of my mates, but the're my mates because they're into the best stuff so... hahaha... Between us we own around 2k films I'd say. I just got rid of around 400 DVD's... just keeping my Blurays and my 4ks. I also mix with streaming BUT tbh... the picture and more importantly the sound for me, is just superior simple as that so I'm a collector really and so are my mates. I like owning the best physical media... one day it'll stop and we'll just have to accept encoded and poorer quality stuff but until then... I'll continue enjoying my collection.

I do get why people don't though, unless you're properly into it, then streaming is the perfect solution.

One of my mates used to but I'm not sure if they still do since streaming took off.

I used to have a massive dvd collection I gave it all away for free must have spent thousands over the years.

When blu ray came out I realised it was a complete waste of money now 4k blu ray has just cemented that point.

There will be 8k blu ray within 5 years and then people who have blu ray will be crying.

I still watch whatever I want in 4k, etc. Ideally they need to create an online cloud collection system where if you buy a movie and a better version comes out it's upgraded to that and you simply stream from your collection on the cloud. But if you can get access to the same system today for free illegally then that's what most will use.

Physical media is going to be very much like vinyl. Extremely rare and super expensive for a very small niche number of people. Give it 5-10 years and the landscape will have been obliterated.

Pretty much everyone I know still buys Blu-rays and/or DVDs.
I hope that the ability to purchase rather than rent/subscribe sticks around for a very long time. I’d rather own the physical media knowing I can watch it whenever I want for the rest of my life at high quality. Though I do limit myself now to films that I absolutely love that are worth owning for me to rewatch, classics and epic TV box sets (The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, True Detectice etc).

100% this!

I have never got rid of any CDs or vinyl, so have a pretty big collection. They all still sound great.

But movies....formats go obsolete so often, why bother?

I stopped buying movies when Lovefilm launched. For us, that was perfect. Rent via post, with BD disk and associated quality. I really wasn't happy when they closed their doors.

We're now just streaming, so are limited to DD on audio tracks. Far from perfect, though my wife and son don't seem to care.

Most people don't care. Therefore it's a dying breed that still buy them.

It would be interesting to see what kind of set ups people who are buying blu rays are actually running. If you are buying 4k blu rays then to get the benefit of what you would be missing out over streaming. Ideally you require an extremely large highly rated TV. Like a 75 inch FALD or 77" oled. Pointless buying 4k Blu-ray's and then watching them on a 43 inch screen.

Then it's the same for the sound. Your buying Atmos source material yet running TV speakers. You may as well be listening to stereo or the people who budget £200-£300 for a soundbar thinking that's what a decent one should cost.

Most folk just walk into a shop. Grab the cheapest Samsung that is what they deem large and are happy. They don't care about the source content, the TV or sound. They just want a TV which looks nice with a nice badge at a cheap price with a brand name that doesn't make them look cheap.

Cinema Paradiso .... they also rent out 4K discs :-)

I stopped buying 4K blu-rays when i bought my 4K ATV can't really notice any difference in the picture between them
And when many of 4K movies are £2.99 to £4.99 on the ATV vs around £20 for a 4K disc (think there was also 2 for £30 offers as well)
Plus if i remember right a lot of 4K movies are only upscaled from 2K :(

What I find always happens is I think PQ and audio from streaming is good these days until I think to play a BR disc and am reminded at how much better at least the audio is. That smooth clear effortless sound afforded by no compression.

Visual quality is ofc also better.

I know one person who buys discs he has thousands but that's it.

Same reasoning here. Big reason, part of, that I got a series X, that disc drive crucial for my movie collection.

Yes, they are very good, been a member for over a year for the sole reason of renting 4k discs.

SO minimum package is £120 per year after the free trial. That's at least six UHD discs that you can buy an own a year, maybe seven if you buy some on ebay/used. Not saying it's bad, you just gotta watch one film at least every two months to 'break even' for the ownership option.

Just depends how much time and want you've got to watch films obviously.

Nobody I know does, everyone just streams. For me the difference between a 4k disc and streaming isn't enough to justify the extra cost, especially as I tend to only watch films once.
