then how do they know?

Mathematical probability, just like how we can determine a good estimate on how many galaxies and stars there are in the observable universe.

I've read a few articles now in recent days saying that some think this asteroid chunk could be an alien artefact from a past civilisation.

I think it's a far stretch but it's interesting to see some astronomers pose th e"what if" question. The Green Bank Telescope is set to lay eyes on it, so well know exactly what it is soon. That telescope is capable of detecting a radio transceiver with the power of a mobile phone.

Have they figured out what the mass is?

Something that shape that nevertheless has a low density (Say less than 200Kg cubic meter) might suggest that it is hollow rather than simply made up from low density material. ;) :p

so its

hollow
metallic
400m+ long
extremely narrow compared to normal space rocks
red coloured
survived cosmic travel.

sounds like a ship, i hope they are friendly!

IIRC it is either tumbling length wise or spiralling extremely fast rather than moving like a rocket or ship would or something like that - unless the inhabitants came from a world with extreme mavity :D

That it might be an artifact does not mean that it might not also be a damaged/derelict one.:p

In any case, If it is tumbling/spinning fast then that is actually very interesting because it means that whatever it is made of must posses impressive tensile strength.

Likely far more so than for your average dirty snowball/aggregation of gravel.
