Our indicator stalks are on the wrong side

MX5s have the indicators the correct way around.

It depends which market the car was built for... not necessary the place it was built.

Most of the cars we buy here were built for Europe and they simply lift out the whole steering wheel assembly, with stalks included, and swap it over to the other side of the car. Rather than doing it properly for RHD vehicles.

I agree. Indicator stalks should be on the right. I think they were on the old Mini 1275 GT I had. Maybe on my 1986 Nissan Micra too.

Mostly it's not really an issue. The only time I sometimes want to change gear and indicate at the same time is on roundabouts.

Current car is CVT with paddle shifters (optional use) so not really an issue for me at the moment.

You shouldn't be touching the indicator at the same time as changing gear so this shouldn't be an issue. Mostly it is because people drive too fast indicate at the last minute and leave too little time to do what they need.

Only if its an import though I would assume

My MX5 has the indicators on the left

Rubbish. I indicate when I feel I need to whether I'm changing gear or not.

I've had a few cars with the indicator on the right, and it is unquestionably the correct way round for a RHD car. I blame penny pinching European manufacturers + UK driver apathy at the time :p

Do you drive a BMW or Audi, by any chance? :D

Me personally I prefer it on the right as you can have one hand on the gear stick while indicating.
Sounds a little unsafe...

The majority of people are right-handed, with the greater strength and control on that side. To indicate, you will typically need to at least loosen your hand grip to operate the stalk. This means having a stalk on the weaker left side retains the stronger grip on the right in the event that it becomes immediately neccesary. Same reason bikes were standardised to have fine-controls like throttles and brakes on the right, with the frequent 'loose-grip' type controls on the left.

My car is a jap import so it has the indicators on the right, it feels much more comfortable and correct than having it on the left.

All UK cars should have it on the correct side, none of this lefty EU business.
