no, they can't afford to.
tuning any engine shortens it's lifespan and a traffic car is expected to serve for 200k miles or so.

they don't need HUGE performance, as a traffic cop once told me they just need to be able to get on the radio and call in someone further ahead.

Well i know for a fact that do the engines up on the police cars here, thats standard ones plus the taffic ones. But don't forget they also add some armour to that as well

Car wars on BBC1 atm puts paid to all these 'police cars are standard' crud!

Interestingly and rather worryingly, they are training on public roads in unmarked cars a full on pursuit!

I saw 110/115 on the speedo at one point during that.

However, it wasn't an Audi speedo and he was driving an A3...

While you have a point on the unmarked bit, public roads are the only way to train an advanced driver.

Without realism, you are wasting £5000 putting a cop through his or
her advanced driving course.

Most Police V70ies in my neck of the woods are D5's - brilliant diesels, but regardless - diesels. T5s, where availble, are uprated in quite a few ways - for starters police versions are chipped to 315 bhp, so even more than R versions. I think they also use uprated 4C multimode suspension so it behaves like you would expect from any 5.little change seconds to 60 car.

as standatd spedo's are + or - 10% some of the cars have them calibrated so they can do you accurately for speeding, this may explain the different spedo

yup, traffic cars have calibrated speedos that read true.
but the "panda's" are just as inaccurate as their civilian counterparts.

I saw that bit.

I thought it was quite ammusing that the guy in the passengers seat was telling the copper driving to slow down and pull in behind the jag but he didn't and floored it and got in just in time

The jag driver probably thought it was some sales rep late or something as he sped up too. (according to the testers commentary).

Nice Audi's though - 3.2V6 FSI models IIRC.

The Elise in the photographs has gone back to Lotus now.. It was used as a cruise liasion vehicle.

The T5's are great traffic and ARV vehicles. The new model's 04 onwards are considerably better than the last ones.. Handling has improved greatly and the engine is better and faster. 6 speed too :)

Could you shed any light on the whole 'cop cars are super tuned' arguement?

The Volvo's are not tuned. I drive a Police Spec Volvo as our Paramedic RRV. The engine is completely standard but brakes and suspension is uprated. This is only to allow repeated high speed stops while carrying all our gear....I quite often slow from 90ish down to 10 for traffic lights, back to silly speeds again only to brake hard again for yet another junction. Arguably, our cars take even more of a pounding as every call is on lights + sirens....up to 14 jobs per 12hr shift!
