Out of intrest how quick are these?

They're all unmarked Scooby's and Skoda VRS's round here.

Octy MKI vRS's round here too. Look very nice too.

I would imagine if standard they would be slower than the standard vRS due to all of the extra equipment they carry in them.

Plus I am sure I have seen a AMG55 Merc estate patrolling on the 303 as well. Wouldn't want that on my ass.

They are Durham Constabulary machines, the first picture looks as though it was taken directly opposite my office :)

Select vehicles are tuned, like the unmarked Scoobs etc which have been selected to crack down on vehicle theft etc so are equipped to take on a chase. But your avage car will just be average, with maybe the ECU based limiters not present. The town based cars are limited to 90mph too I think.

I know the cars we use are focus estates, and not limited to 90 as we've cracked over 100 in it attending a blue light call. The pandas are ragged hard mainly because of the type of driving thats required to blue light it through busy town areas.

think how much abuse a police car gets, chances are theres plenty of times from cold it has to be totally thrashed to pieces. there is no way they would risk doing anything too serious to the engine, imagine the sort of damage that would occur on say, a 300-350 bhp scooby/evo with full throttle action from cold.... day in, day out...

The one a friend of mine used to have was an ex Police car and was running upwards of 350bhp....rather quick, they aren't standard.

Thats the crap low spec EVO though (denoted by the weak spoiler effort)

Still no slouch at about 276bhp IIRC.

Some volvo police cars are also fitted with race engines, which seems a bit vague to me, but that's what my cousin was told by a relative who used to work for volvo.

They get sent to specialist tuners who modify pretty much everything. This will see the plus side of 170mph and will hit 60 in around 3-4 seconds at full chat.

I doubt that very much. I don't know of any police spec traffic car that will hit 3-4 seconds, more so a Volvo and that is no disprespect to them because most traffic plods will tell you the T5 is pound for pound one of the best traffic cars there has been so far. 3-4 seconds is territory that even some Ferrari and Lambos cannot achieve.

It is an urban myth that traffic cars are tuned before delivery except that wiring loops may be different to support the lighting and gadgetry in a modern traffic vehicle. Also, an ARV may get upgraded brakes and suspension as they carry a lot of weight in terms of ballistic protection.

Lets look at some of the traffic vehicles in operation.

BMW 530, BMW 330, Mercedes 320 Kompressor, Volvo S60, Evos .... the list goes on and these cars have excellent performance out of the box. Is there any need to tune a police car of these types ? The majority of cars they will pursue will be older motors that have been stolen to commit crimes in but invariably there will sometimes be a performance car that is pursued that may have better performance but 9 times out of ten the police driver is a far superior driver which counts for a lot when the more inexperienced driver loses it on a corner, which is what happens a lot of the time.

A car that is failing to stop and accelerating away is never faster than digital communiations and the copper chopper which will be called on as will other class 1 drivers to try to effect a T-Pack manoever while the helicopter vidoes the lot overhead.

The Dark Side is clearly on the ball mentioning cost. It costs a lot of money to tune a car, especially a fleet of them and already stretched police budgets could not manage that, especially when they have to justify such costs to a police authority who bankroll the force and who will want to know why a 3 litre beemer needs tuning which will shave operational life out of it as a result.

You will occasionally see Lambos and other performance cars striped up but it is usually for show only in conjunction with a supplying garage. Which police authority will give the go ahead for such an exotic and totally unjustified spend ?

Yep, Sussex have at least one unmarked Evo patrolling the M23/A23 (dark grey). They also have a dark green Saab 9-5 and a black Audi A6 (not sure what engine). I've also seen a dark green 3.0 X-Type Jag in the area as well.

I'd be very surprised if they were, generally engines built for racing need rebuilding fairly often.

I've spoken to at least one person on the Volvo forums who bought an 850/V70 T5 from the police force, and found it alread had a remap.
I know it is not normally the case though.

I'm just trying to save the pennies to remap my 850R... :D

There wouldn't be much point in upgrading a Volvo V70/S60 T5 much past 300bhp because it's FWD. That upgrade can be done pretty easily, but given the weight those guys carry, it's not going to give you much.

It would be easier for them to get T5-Rs which are 300bhp anyway and AWD as standard. But they don't, so why tune them?

I think most of the police Volvos get uprated breaks and that's about it.
