Out of money, might have to sell my car :S

After spending the past few months thinking about it. I've finnally decided to sell my car. I'm currently at uni which means I don't really have the money for petrol, parts or insurance so my Corsa sxi now sits at home, 100 miles away, on my driveway. If I leave it any longer then the value is just going to fall and fall.

Anyway, I still want to get about so i'm thinking about using the money from the sale, getting some lessons over the summer and getting a bike instead.

Any ideas how much I will save, in terms of insurance / petrol (if any). I'm currently paying £1500 on my car and it should drop to about £900 - £1000 this year. As i'm sure many of you will know, the corsa can be a bit thirsty on the motorway and because I do drive a lot at home, it all mounts up. Also, any idea on a first bike. I'm fairly comfotable riding bikes and I would like something that has a bit of go to it.

Cheers

Well i'm 19 so it would have to be a 125. Once I reach 21 I can then decide to go back to the car with cheaper insurance or go for a more powerfull bike :)

I suppose it depends on what job i manage to get after uni.

The fact that you are 19 doesn't mean you're limited to a 125. You can still do your full test and then you're limited to 33bhp for two years. If you get a 125 you will not be happy with the power if you want "something that has a bit of go to it." 125's are very slow (unless you get a de-restricted RS125/NSR125 etc.) If you do your full test and want to save money you could buy something like a Kawasaki GPZ 500 and restrict it for the next two years. Just an idea as I know from personal experience how boring 125's get.

Yea, that might be a plan. I was looking at a DT125RE tho, see I live up in the welsh 'vaaaallliiieesss' at the moment so lots of mountain bike / motocross tracks to have a go on.

why not a honda xr 125? it has 4 stroke engine and low maintenance.
you can get a pretty new one for 1.5k, insurance with a good company will be around 300 TPFT, tax 15 a months MOT not sure,

helmet and jacket etc etc will sum up to about 150 if you get a cheap helmet.

so i estimate the starting cost will be about 1.65k

and yearly 315 with how ever much petrol and oil your going to use.

Full test, RS125 derestricted 33bhp and wighs naff all. best laff! Maintenace aint scary at all, put decent oil in it and it will be fine.
If you are really worried about petrol costs and mainteneace etc... then the cbr 125 is an option, but does not have any go to it at all and you might as well get a cg125 and be boring. In that situation, full test, restricted NC30 honda 400. I have had both bikes (the 400 was not restricted) and both were great. The aprilia being more fun I think although no where near as fast, it made up for it in the bends (and the NC30 is regarded as one of the best handlers about), I loved it and am contemplating getting the 250 version.

oh yea, insurance aint as small as some, but I think I paid about 600 on full test at 17 so should be less that that. they do aboy 35mpg on a tank, (but I didnt exactly ride econamicly, red line everywhere.

lol.
what bike did you have?

i got quote on my honda nsr for 330 TP with 0y NCB 18yo.

Any good insurance companies???

Well its a toss up between the Yamaha DT125RE or the Aprilia_rs125.

To be honest, I drive because I love to drive, it's as simple as that and the Aprilia sounds fun and looks the part, I'm only ever going to use it to get between places around here and I only live 10 mins from the university.

Then again offroading is good fun :)

Whats motorway driving like on a 125?

Its a no contest really.

it holds motorway speed well I used to ride 30 miles to wigan at more than motorway speed to get mine serviced where I bourght it from and It was great. Not the most comfortable, quite a lot of weight on wrists, but it wouldent be fun if it was comfy, thats not what its for. Its not uncomfertable, the seat what quite big and comfy enough. I wouldent reccoment anything else to be honest unless u fancy restricting a bigger bike. But it will be about 50kg heaver and no where near as fast and not as good or confidence inspiring in the twistys.

I have had a 03 plate (new at the time) RS125, had that for over a year and covered about 12000 miles on it. (commuted to work/college and played on it a lot at weekends) before that I had a gilera runner 125 scooter. and after that I had a honda NC30. I fixed that up and sold it, rode it for about a year. Now I just have the car, but am contemplating getting back into bikes with a RS250. now I'm 20 (just) but passed test when I was 17 so have an unrestricted licence.
