out of the loop, what's a quiet upgrade for an 8800GT?

As it says, I'm doing an upgrade and considering changing the graphics as well, although to be honest it's more of a want to than need to. Last game I bought was HL2 and it still copes fine with that :o

Doesn't need to be top of the range but it must be quiet, preferably within £250.

Edit: Oh, and preferably single slot, if you still get such a card :p

best I can think of which is quiet and single slot is one of the new powercolor 5770's although this is only a ~£100 card

however the Gainward GTX 470 which comes with an aftermarket cooler might be worth looking in to for £235

I'm buying a new card in the not too distant future so have a scout round of the members market for a nice, cool and quiet 4870x2. :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. :) Though mine isn't as hot or noisey as some others out there. :p

I would say wait for the 6000 series from AMD which isn't far off at all. A 5770 single slot will be an upgrade but I don't think it will be a particularly substantial one. Someone correct me on that if need be.

as above, if your mobo supports it you could maybe xfire a couple of 5770s or if it doesnt then to get a decent upgrade youre prob gonna have to look at dbl slot cards

@Arc
That was about right.
@Op
I would get a dual slot TBH, as IMO the single slot coolers are not substantial enough for performance cards, which means more noise.
Another option is something like a Gigabyte GTX460, but as already said, it's better to wait just at the moment.

You just need to wait I mean the 6series from ATI/AMD are coming, the price drops will be worth the wait and a 8800gt will no doubt get you by for a few weeks.

Note: I hate saying wait, when the 6 series comes out then you should wait again for nvidias answer, but then..more waiting as the 6 series derivatives will drop the price even more.

Personally I would get a Gigabyte HD 5770 Silent, less than £140 and a worthy upgrade, though expensive for a 5770 (equal (ish) to a 4870) its silent solution is class leading (cooling vs noise)

It's generally a bad idea to get two midrange cards when a single high end card is an option.

I agree, I was just giving the option as I did not know why the OP had specified single slot, if its an actual space restriction rather than a preference then this might not be an option
