Is the 1.6 Zetec engine referred to above the same as what you'd get in a year 2000 Fiesta Zetec S?
I think so - it was removed from a Fester and only cost a couple of hundred quid...
Benneh - the guy who owns it has done all the design work for the one-off bits himself...You'd be looking at a LOT of money if you didn't have the necessary skills.
That said, I reckon that (if you are able to design and fabricate stuff yourself), you could build a 250bhp, 850Kg Kadett/Chevette for a smidgen over two grand.
Dom's car (above) is probably approaching the zenith of DIY motoring in this country at the moment:
Light shell
Good seats (Kevlar bucket for driver, I think the passenger has an MR2 seat...)
Very sorted handling
Small, light, free-revving engine with fully independant ECU taking feedback from many sensors.
Wide rubber
There are only a few others that I'm REALLY looking forward to at the moment; something like a certain twincharged (blown and turbo'd) Hillman Imp running full DIY ECU, bike throttle bodies and DIY-carbon kit.
