Out with the Rover idea, in with the Xsara VTS!

I have an 01 VTS (series 2), I was after a GTI-6 for ages but after looking at W reg ones for 5.5k with horrendous interiors I decided I could live with the looks of the Xsara for the extra I received. Those extras being:
01 car for 2k less
Auto Wipers
6CD changer
AC & Climate Control
Trip Computer
Steering Wheel Controls
Electric Everything
etc. etc.

In all, I took the gamble and so far it's been great. The car is quick, not uneconomical if driven sensibly (obviously is as thirsty as you drive it), it won't turn any heads but it is a good sleeper. Highly recommended ;) Oh, mine is Posi Blue, it's a lovely colour when cleaned up.

I hardly call leather/alca seats and spacious insides as a hideous interior? The gti-6 has every one of those extras as well, apart from climate control :)

You keep enjoying your grandad look a like sleeper though by all means ;)

Well only looking to get the VTS really, the VTR did come into consideration but just wouldn't have the extra oomf the VTS would have. Parkers say the VTR has 112bhp. I'm not really too fussed about the look and its not that bad ;) - Happy in the knowledge that I will be able to beat most Charvers in their Nova's :D

Yet you expect them to be the height of *exterior* design and would pay double the money to acheive that? ;)

When did I say they were the height of exterior design?

I just can't stand the exterior of the VTS! So what? I easily had the money for a very nice GTi6 so I went for it.

Anyway yet again it gets dragged into petty bickering  (Please no-one spout out "HAVE A ROLLEYES BACK!!!1111oneoen" it's a bloody smiley not a death-threat, you don't look big saying it.)

Right well, going to see a VTS on the weekend. 98' plate. 68 on the clock, full service history. The guy is looking for £1600 but there is an issue with the alarm which he said he will knock some more off after a negotiation. I think if i can get it for about £1300 I'd be happy. Will need a cam belt change though! he cant remember doing one, Thats the only thing I'm worried about, Don't want it snapping on me on my way home. If i hear any tapping I'll be outta there like a flash! :D

Really I wonder why that is - the guy already decided he wanted a VTS but no we have to have an OMG THE 306 GTi-6 IS THE WORLDS MOST GORGEOUS CAR AND THUS WORTH 4000 times more' debate anyway..

Only Peugeot that IS damn good looking and thus worth the purchase price purely for looks = 406 Coupe. People WILL look at a 406 Coupe. It looks special, it is special, it's a beautiful car. A 306 is not - its a mass market hatchback. Yes, it's a nice looking mass market hatchback but it cannot escape the hatchyness. It's like me saying it would be worth buying a £3000 98 Mondeo over a £1500 98 406 becuase 'the mondeo looks better' - yes it probably does but errrr twice the money? HELLO?

See? These cars are just great for what you get - I mean, £1600? If it said GTi-6 on it it'd be £3200 :)

When did I personally say that? All I said was that it's a fine car if you can live with the god-awful looks. This guy can so fairy nuff.

The bickering comment was aimed at both parties thank you ;)

And besides whatever extra you pay for a GTi6 you'll get back when you come to sell it. Maybe more?

i'll keep my extra 3 grand thanks ;) As for the interior, you may be right but having looked at a few of each and being totally impartial the VTS is a much nicer interior to look at and use.

When are people going to realise residuals DONT work like that?

Yes, a GTi-6 may always be worth 50% more than a VTS but as the car depreciates, 50% becomes smaller! A GTi-6 thats £3k more than a VTS won't always be worth £3k more than a VTS, are you seriously suggesting that once then GTi-6 depreciates to £3k the VTS will be free to a good home? Errr.... yea ok.

There is rarely, if ever, a time when buying a used car that costs significantly more due to better residuals will result in you getting that back when you sell it..

Well going to see it later, only thing I'm worried about is that its had 6 previous owners

Think that is a bit above average for a 7-8 year old car. This is the only thing making me a little uneasy. Anything to worry about here?

if it has got full service history then that would ease my mind some-what.

Never been fussed on the previous owners thing myself, mine had 5 when I bought it.

As long as the car is in good nick with all the history there.
