for those interested, there were a lot of people that enjoyed the 1st game :
Explore the breathtaking alien world of Adelpha, support the local Talans in their struggles and fight your way through fast-paced battles against invading robot forces in this 3rd-person, open world, action adventure sequel to the 1999 cult classic.

Seam Link : Outcast - A New Beginning

Coming 15 Mar, 2024

20 years after the award-winning action adventure hit, Outcast, pioneered the genre of non-linear open-world games, the long-awaited sequel sees Cutter Slade return to the spectacular alien world of Adelpha. Resurrected by the almighty Yods, he has returned to find the Talans enslaved, the world stripped of its natural resources, and his own past intertwining with the invading robot forces. It's up to him to go on a mission and save the planet again.

The original team behind Outcast 1 has reunited to create this fascinating world, full of dangerous creatures and home to the Talan people – an ancient culture whose fate has become inextricably linked with earth since the events of the first game. You play as Cutter Slade, ex-Navy SEAL, sporting the same dry wit he had back in the 90s – however, the world around him has changed and eventually, so will he.

To save Adelpha, you will …

use your jetpack to jump, air-dash, glide, and quickly traverse the fantastic in-game open world
  • combine dozens of different modules to create your own personal weapon for taking down the robot invaders
  • have total control to approach the story at your own pace in this non-linear world
  • explore the world without boundaries, discover hidden temples and dangerous wildlife
  • get familiar with the Talan culture while helping them free their villages and gain access to ancient Talan powers that use forces of nature to destroy your enemies
  • experience a beautiful, hand-crafted world accompanied by an epic soundtrack by Outcast's original composer, Lennie Moore

Definitely a game in my retro rose-tinted glasses.
Can't remember if I played the remake but this look quite promising.
I see there's a playable demo so maybe I'll give it go once back at my pc

I remember playing the original and it needing a crazy 600mhz cpu at the time when most were on 233 or so. It had a really unique style though and for the time they really nailed fluid effects. It was a game that really captured my imagination and they did an excellent job with it. Will definitely play this, although probably not at release, it sounds like there are some issues.

I remember the original due to the use of voxels for rendering - but I never liked the mechanics of the game - just felt really naff to play.

Original game was ahead of its time, quite a masterpiece to be honest. I played the remake some years back, which was also great, same game with new graphics, animations and controller support.

And after seeing this trailer, I am considering buying the sequel, it looks pretty awesome

Runs great on my PC, combat is pretty fun.

Had to add the following to get 32:9 to display

c:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\O2\Saved_demo\Config\WindowsNoEditor\Engine.ini

[/script/engine.localplayer]
AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainYFOV

Need to complete so many other games though, so hopefully this will be down in price if I eventually buy it.

Oooh missed the demo part, gonna try. Never played the OG.

Not sure how people managed to miss the fairly long "PREPARING SHADERS"..

Edit. Yeah it's terrible performance wise even with DLSS. Massive frame drops, stuttery etc. Aka, typical pc release.

Was just reading an article about this today as never heard of it until now and came here to search... Pinned as a Zelda style open world exploration game with a large map to freely explore.

Firstly, I think this game in the DX12 "Experimental" mode uses some sort of wrapper. My screenshots worked fine but neither RTSS nor Nvidia App could capture any gameplay. The game asks to use DX11 or DX12 (Experimental) on first run and naturally I used DX12.

I played an hour of it and yes it looks nice and there are mostly no stutters (it's UE4 remember, stutters will get mentioned often), and it runs really well generally. There's this "mist" around the map, get too close and it teleports you back lol so not as free to explore as I had hoped.

On top of that, whilst the visuals are very nice, the control mechanics of the character feel like you're moving someone floating above ground rather than on the ground with friction etc. Gets kinda weird after a bit.

The combat and jetpack are rather quite fun though, I would liken that to Just Cause in terms of how these are used in the game.
The dialogue and cutscenes were meh I found, the cutscenes seem to use the game engine, but are locked at 30fps, and there are frametime stutters in the cutscenes which makes no sense, they are also locked to 16:9 aspect ratio.

I also observed that the menu screens run at a lower fps (sometimes up to 30fps lower) than the actual game which is just bizarre.

It feels like a budget AVATAR Frontiers of Pandora with many similarities. Graphically I think this is about as good as UE4 can get though and it's done quite nicely overall. So general findings, at 5160x2160 the game runs over 100fps, averaging 120 odd and hits my Gsync cap of 139 regularly.

The shader compilation at the start does a good job, but there are some stutters when a new piece of action happens, like the first time you get the shield and go to the next room with the big turrets, the moment they fire at you there's a hitch in the frametime, why were they not cached during the PSO at the start of the game????
Likewise the first time you use melee with the shield there's a hitch.

Other than that though there are no stutters anywhere else other than the frametime hitches I noted. I think even with these you could play the game without the hitches being an issue to the gameplay as they are just that, hitches.

The major issue for me is the way he moves on screen, it just doesn't feel like you are connected to a character who is connected to terrain, feels like a robot of sorts just gliding around on the screen.

Pros:
- Sound direction is excellent, some really nice ambience and weapon sounds, very cinematic.
- Performance is great at 5160x2160, it's ~90fps without upscaling, or up to >139fps with DLSS Quality, but I do have a 4090...
- The visuals are very nice for a UE4 game
- The weapons and tech in the first hour you get introduced to seem cool and fun on the whole
- Fast loading times
- You do burn if you stand on fire. Likeness to Zelda CONFIRMED!!!!

Cons:
- Meh script/dialogue
- Characters don't seem to be likeable much, just generic fluff
- Feels like some bits were on a lower budget than others
- Character movement is wooly
- Menus run at a lower fps than the game
- Cutscenes are locked 16:9 at 30fps, even though appear to be in-engine, and have frametime hitches during them
- Shader stutter at times when new effects appear for the first time
- No way to turn off chromatic aberration through ingame settings
- The mini map is anything but mini

There are key sites selling it for £25, I think it's worth that, but not it's Steam price at £50.
