An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'email subject', Account: 'Business Mail', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 aamtaout02-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [90.197.252.132]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

Getting this error when trying to send mail using outlook express. I've set it up correctly im sure as it works on my desktop normally and i thought i'd sent using this lappy too. Receive mail no problem even now too, checked the online ntl guide for setting up and see no conflictions.

Perhaps a server issue? Only noticed it last night and today but cant remember sending emails off it too well.

Cheers

This one is simpler than it looks. You are connecting using the IP 90.197.252.132 which is a sky broadband IP. However NTL don't want you to use their SMTP server unless if you are using NTL broadband. Therefore they are blocking you - hence the "connection refused from [90.197.252.132]"

Simple solution - try it from a ntl broadband connection.

Better solution = find another outbound mail provider (smtp server).

ah right, cheers mate would never have caught onto that.

Unfortunately the NTL conn isnt possible as i have sky in my uni house. Im a bit of an idiot so do you mean i need an entirely new email addy? Or just need an outbound mail provider? If the latter, where can i get one or what are the options?

Thanks again

All is not lost!

Instead of using outlook express for your email you could always use a web based interface such as Mail2web.

I use it when i'm at my dads to receive my email.

Just go to www.mail2web.com enter your email address and your email password and there you have it.

you can setup your own outbound smtp server on your pc with a little freeware product, should solve your problems. I would suggest getting a non-specific ISP email address, who knows how you will be with in future.

You've got a few options, some suggested above, but you could also try these two:

- Turn on SMTP authentication in Outlook for your NTL email account. Some ISPs allow you to use their SMTP servers if you auth to their SMTP server while using another ISPs connection. Follow the instructions here: http://www.dnet.net/techSupport/smtpAuthOE.asp

- Find out what Sky's SMTP server address is and use that.

you can use any old SMTP server for sending mail can you not?

you could try just sticking relay.plus.net in your smtp server address to use plusnet's one, I don't think you need a plusnet connection for it - and I've used it for sending mail from my uni email address.

Most SMTP server owners restrict who is allowed to connect, usually by IP address. If you leave an SMTP server as an open relay then it's usually just a couple of hours before it's being used by spammers to send on their emails.

This is a terrible idea, not only is it unlikely your ISP will let this traffic through, but every email you send will get picked up on as coming from a residential IP and instantly sent to the spam box / deleted.
