Outlook.com Custom Domains Discontinued

I use outlook.com with my own domain but I've just received an email from Microsoft saying they have discontinued the service for new customers and discontinuing the admin tools for existing customers come July.

It sounds like I can either continue as I am but with the risk that it is now an unsupported service with no tools to alter existing email accounts, or move to a different service. Microsoft's recommendation

Anyone moved their domain elsewhere or have any recommendations? I suppose Microsoft's hosted exchange seems to be the most logical move but almost seems a bit overkill for personal email.

Microsoft's hosted Exchange Online email is indeed a great service and may well be overkill but at least you can be sure it will support all the features that you need. It does take a little poking around at first in the admin area to get a feel of what can be done with it. For only a couple of quid a month though it is cheap and well featured.

The other option is Google Apps for Business which is roughly the same price and comes with a few extra features that are useful.

Since I've used both of them I'd say hosted Exchange Online is probably the best option out of the two for your use case.

I've been an Office 365 subscriber for around 18 months now. I was on the hosted exchange plan and I've now moved to the Enterprise E3 plan. Worth every single penny.

I thought you said it was hosted ;). I've overlooked Sharepoint on Office 365 because of the hideous default template that the company site comes with, and the lack of support for custom domains since it requires SSL and having a way of supplying your own SSL cert is apparently beyond the O365 team.

Yep totally left my not for profit account for local club high and dry.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to give Exchange Online a go.

Looking at these they all seem to be tailored around organisations and businesses - are you using these as an individual or for personal usage? The sign up form requires an organisation name, is it just a case of making something up or is there another way to sign up if it's for personal use?

I'm interested in other alternatives that allow me to use my domain. I have a private exchange setup running from home on a homelab setup (XEnserver 6.2) as the SSL certs and power is cheaper than hosted office 365 in NZ... but sometimes I kill my server by accident and I currently have outlook.com to pick up the mx direction if my server drops off.

I'd like to continue this and also allow me to add/remove accounts as necessary... hence the question, are there any free sites that offer this same functionality?

I'm a bit confused as it seems a Microsoft account and Office 365 account are two separate things.

So my current Microsoft account is my e-mail address. When I create the Office 365 account that will, presumably, also be my e-mail address. I've been reading this may cause a conflict when accessing services. Their suggestion is to change the primary alias of your Microsoft account to something else, but I can't do this due to it stating 'Your organisation's policies prevent you from changing your primary alias.'. I can only imagine this is something to do with me using my own domain with outlook.com.

Has anyone had this problem, or is it a non-issue?

When you try and log in to an MS service and you have an Office 365 account that matches a Live Passport or whatever it's called now it will normally realise this and present you with an option to sign into either one of them.

Thanks Caged, I've set my trial up now with no problems so far.
