It's probably worth heading over to outlook.com and grabbing a "@outlook.com" mail address whilst you can. If you only get hotmail.co.uk options when signing up a new account try using a IE inprivate browsing mode or chrome incognito mode window to sign up.

I know there will gmail users who will rant about hotmail and it sucks etc without giving it a chance but personally I quite like it :)

Can this, as yet, allow you to use an email client like Windows live mail desktop and connect with that...? I can't find the POP or IMAP server or port settings so would they be added in time...?
It uses exchange active sync so set it up as if it is an exchange account with a server entry of "m.hotmail.com". Works well with Outlook 2013 without having to use the "outlook connector" old hotmail account used to have to use.

Anyone know what the pop settings for incoming mail is for outlook.com?

I have tried pop3.live.com but Outlook 2010 is having none of it.

Just realised Vimes had the answer already. Just had to change the port number to 995.
Although the better option is to set the account type in your mail client to "Exchange" as it uses activesync which is generally better than pop

Would this be better as a primary email acount for banking n' stuff than Gmail?
Pretty similar tbh although gmail does have 2 factor authentication which can be useful.

Pretty much comes down to personal preference, the days of "l33t" gmail users and "lol n00b" hotmail have long gone except in the minds of a few.

Have a look at some of the outlook.com tips on sites like http://www.winsupersite.com/

According to the rep, Microsoft has in fact looked into using the 2-step security method, but chose not to take that route because only a small number of Gmail users actually use it (and it's a pain, to be honest, but effective). Instead, Microsoft wants "to find a strong solution that everyone can use, versus just the 1-percent of users that figure out how to navigate a bunch of additional setup options."
