I had a terrible panic yesterday, thinking my hotmail account had been hacked. I couldn't get in all day, and it wouldn't let me use the multi-factor authentication, and I have some train tickets I need sent to that account.I left it 24 hours (as suggested) and tried again. No luck.

I managed to login last night, but now am unable to access again.

It turns out this is a microsoft problem (but also now my problem).

Thought I'd post this in case anyone else is having the same issue.

I had an issue where I was getting certificate errors on my Samsung mail client using hotmail. Might have been related as its not happening today.

Yeah I was keeping a check of this yesterday.

Seems like an absolute mess to be honest. The whole 'password wrong too many times' has been going for people for a good few weeks, just feels like it's become more widespread now.

They claim they've fixed the issue, but they clearly haven't, too many reports of the same problems still.

I've not been able to login to hotmail for about a month on Android, not so much of an issue as I never have internet enabled on my phone but sometimes I do need certain mails on it, so I've had to resort to forwarding those to my Gmail

My OH on the pc has had the 'too many attempts' pain in the backside for weeks now, having to verify and then verify another way because we don't want you to verify that way now because reasons...

It randomly seemed to resolve itself today.

Oddly on her phone she's not had the problem at all.

since the 1990s legacy user at the moment. contemplating moving away due to recent events.

gmail for anything web mail related

not used hotmail since the early 2000's

I cant believe some people still use aol etc

I thought it was just me :D

Try and log in with password: "password wrong too many times"
Try and log in with SMS Authentication code: "this service is currently unavailable, try another method"
Try and log in with Email Authentication code to other email address: Get the match the image captcha prompt that are now so ridiculously hard/unreadable to stop AI, that I got that wrong twice...
Eventually manage to log in (although then get prompted to create a passkey which I don't want due to using multiple devices), check the security centre and it shows no attempts to log in using password from anywhere

When you're in there. Have you added a mobile number to your account information. (I'm not talking about the two factor area), but there's a section in the main my account near the bottom?

People have been adding a mobile number in there and then when they sign in, they use the mobile number rather than the email and that seems to get around the 'too many times' thing.

The sign in activity thing is pretty useless now. It got nerfed a year or so ago and doesn't show failed attempts!

MS now stating:

Current status: We’ve completed all our optimization changes to fully address the impact for the outlook.com iOS sign-in experience and we’ve confirmed service health has returned to normal. We anticipate that users should no longer experience repeated sign-in prompts hindering the sign-in process. We recommend that users attempt to sign-in again and if they encounter the error message stating “You’ve tried to sign-in too many times with an incorrect account or password”, they should follow the inline user experience to reset their password and sign-in again.

What they fault to realise is that trying to reset the password doesn't work and people have already pointed that out to them.

It feels like they're claiming this is an IOS issue only now too, which is wide of the mark as well!

I’m surprised that Hotmail hasn’t be switched off yet to be honest.

I tell everyone I meet that whinges about Hotmail to move to iCloud or Gmail ASAP.
Tbh, it's usually fine. Not sure what they've done here - well, I can, they've tried hardening up against bots spamming login attempts, but they've got to the point where they're now blocking out legitimate users.

Plus if they where to switch it off, how do you even start to deal with that?

MS would probably need to give 6 months notice, but it would have to weigh the servers costs against the negative publicly.
