Outstanding music in games

Some personal favorites of mine (pc only)

SiN - First time I had heard dynmaic music in a game before and the soundtrack was brilliant.

Oblivion - Suits the game to a tee, very tranquil and relaxing

Left 4 Dead 2 - Just brilliantly atmospheric

Carmageddon 1+2 - Heavy metal in a brutal game, just awesome.

KotoR 1 should be in there, and MGS 4 are the only two additions I can think of right now. I struggle to remember anything more than 5 years ago :p

Another vote for Jeremy Soule, but more specifically for his work on Guild Wars.

The entire Monkey Island series does it for me as far as retro goes.

Going really retro - the incredibly simplistic, ever-repeating yet strangely hypnotic chip warblings of Manic Miner and JSW :D

Apart from Oblivion and Morrowind I have a half-guilty love of the music on the original Serious Sam, mainly because it so perfectly summed up the game. The music for the big boss fight at the end is great, but the score for the third-last fight (the last enclosed courtyard, with about eight waves of monsters) is just brilliant.

I have to admit, the music from Shatter really does stand out - it suits the game, and doesn't grate as much as some repetitive tracks do. A real gem of a game
