Outstanding music in games

no one mentioned the original Icewind Dale? :confused:

That has pretty much the best music I've ever encountered in a game and almost completely makes up for the rather poor storyline (compared to the BG series anyway).

Xenon 2: MegaBlast. Specifically, the title tune "MegaBlast" by Bomb The Bass. Utterly awesome track, made even more awesome by the fact that the rendition the Sega Master System got was limited by the 8-bit nature of the console.

I still have a Master System II. Sonic 1 built in, and various game cartridges. Most of them take an awful lot of effort to get working these days, but Xenon 2 works straight off the bat, every time. Which is useful, since the game and the music are wonderful :D

Xenon2 was on the PC as well , It's still my favourite game tune & blaster :D
 
Final Fantasy 8 holds a place in my heart music wise, as does the save game track from Final Fantasy 9 (the only good point of that blasted game!)

Oh, and of course, Rez ;)

I used to install games off the old 'blobby' type cds just for the install music. Most of the games didnt work anyway, but i liked the music!

and of course loads of games on the amiga.

Lemmings - Atari St
Ghost & Goblins - c64/arcade
Infact a lot of c64 games had great music.

Recently though... nothing really springs to mind, most seems fine apart from EA who consistenly turn out dire sound tracks to there sports games, e.g fight night.

edit: actually i remember burnout revenge on the 360 having a good soundtrack and motorstorm on the ps3 too.

I think the original guitar hero must be the best though.

FF8 and FFX, the music from both brings back some fond memories for me. Infact it makes me wish I could go back and in hind sight I would appriciate them much more.

Fabulous soundtrack!

Killing GI's to some serious Motown tracks whiled away many a happy evening for me back in 2005. :D 'Get Ready' and 'Nowhere to run' were my tunes of choice.

Oh and Baldur's Gate II as well! But then again I always mention that game when I get the chance!
 
Another vote here for the EvE Online soundtrack, if you love that ambient stuff, you will adore it. It has strange effects on you when flying through strangley pretty sections of virtual space
