There's been allot of activity recently concerning the Ouya. Deadline for pre-orders was the 4th. I managed to get my pre-order for a console and extra pad delivered in April the night before :)

The big news is the Ouya will be sold through various retail outlets in June which should boost it's profile. It's also changed colour again! And the price of the controller as gone up from $30 to $50  (still worth it)

Anyway can't wait to get mine in April, anyone else ordered one?

Is there anything special about this platform, vs another android based platform?

I ask because Note 2 has a docking system that allows you to output anything on screen to the TV via HDMI. The dock is also compatible with a 360 pad. Or a PS3 pad(Need something from google store for this one to work)

Just wonder if there would be any benefit atall to owning the console over the dock.

Unlike other android devices this has huge backing and is gaining quite a following. Not only is the console well thought out and made but equally so are the joypads. The Ouya is a true console and not just a android device. Games that are made for it will be able to utilise it's controllers from the off.

Actually the Ouya has very limited backing compared to content for the google play store. And you're kidding yourself if you don't think that the majority of games on the Ouya will be ports from the play store of games which were designed for touch based devices!

Yep ordered. If anything it's a nice streamer and BT control pad that works on PC too. My 360 wireless pad went AWOL so a replacement would cost me £25-30 anyway. Was looking at those Android TV sticks but to be honest they all look rubbish quality and the XBMC team supporting Ouya made my mind up

e: and ePSXe said they are looking into Ouya \o/ along with Mupen64, PS1, SNES and MD emus in one box I will be in 7th heaven and the wife won't moan about me dragging dusty old consoles into the living room :D

Hmmm.

I was referring to the people backing it (Kickstarters) and enthusiasts who are getting behind the console.

I don't doubt for a minute there will be allot of ports from the Play Store and never kidded myself there won't but it doesn't mean it won't get it's own dedicated games. If Madfinger and Gameloft want to port there AAA games over I'm not going to complain ;)

It's a good Job the Ouya team thought to include a touch pad on it's controller for "games which were designed for touch based devices!"

Even If the Ouya was to fail as a Games Console it's still an awesomely cheap device for XBMC, Emulation and tinkering :)

On the subject of yearly Ouya updates. I say great it will be just like the PC, constantly up to date, backwardly compatible but dirt cheap! I reckon it would cost £50 a year to to own the latest Ouya when you take in to consideration you'll be able to sell your old one.

Just wish I jumped in as a backer so I could have gotten an engraved Ouya :(

But Ouya is cheaper than any half decent android phone or tablet and you also get official XBMC support and a controller.

doesn't really matter though does it, most people interested in this will already have a half decent android phone or tablet. i know i do anyway, i have a nexus 4 and 7.

you can connect a ps3 controller to your android phone/tablet too. i already own a ps3, so again for me this is something i already own.

therefore do i pay £100-£150 for something i can already do on my phone/tablet? seems like a lot of money for next to little benefit. using a phone may not be the best thing to do i suppose, if you get a call halfway through a game, etc, but i could easily use my nexus 7 with miracast technology.

i don't really see what all the hype is about, when most people already have the ability to do exactly what this console does already.

It's a single platform, with standardised controllers and connects to your TV. I think people are too hung up on the SoC it's powered by. XBMC does run on many phones and tablets, but it isn't optimised for them and often lacks hardware acceleration. Hooking a phone or tablet up to a TV isn't half as convenient as a small cheap box that's always connected and ready to go

So yes, you could hook up your tablet/phone, which is more expensive, and hook up a 3rd party controller with patchy support, and XBMC may work...

Its not really a single platform, its just a glorified accessory for Android and its the price point that makes it attractive and the possible support (though that appears to be limited, though what it might have is useful). Its only USP is the touchpad on the controller, but then its even dubious if thats preferable over a normal touch screen experience (which itself isnt great).

Its really not all that tbf, I certainly wouldnt back it, its money for old rope.

ps3ud0
