Oven bulb keeps blowing

Hi guys. I had an oven bulb which lasted about 2 years in my old Bosch oven and it blew just over a week or so ago. I bought that one from Builders Depot. So I went and bought another of the same bulb last week from Builders Depot, (£1.20) and when I turned the oven on the bulb didn't work.Took it back for a replacement which worked for a few days but today it didn't and the filament broken. I thought the first one was DOA but perhaps my oven bulb socket is faulty and blew it and the second bulb. I'll go to Toolstation and try one of their bulbs. I read that screwing it in and then backing it off half a turn can help. It'll be be a pain if the socket is faulty. Anyone think that's likely?

Oh dear. I'm not great with electrics and have never tried removing the oven from the surrounding enclosure. But would be silly to get a professional in as that would probably cost the best part of a new oven. From what I can see, a new Bosch oven similar to mine can be bought for under £300. Mine was new in 2012. Never skipped a beat except now with this bulb issue.

had one replaced gratis after 12months it lasted less than a month and this month now been replaced by hughes who put a better quality one in.

Thanks. Mines a screw in thread round bulb SES E14. My concern is that, although I bought cheap bulbs, one of them lasted 2 years which was good but the other two (exactly the same brand bulb) have both broken making me think it's the socket. But anyway, I'll try a different bulb and see how that goes.
 
for ses - this is the ses that's been running in my cheaper belling oven for 5 years or so

Dont touch it with bare skin, the oils on your skin as they burn off when heating the oven can cause the lamp to pop.

Ah. I did touch it while screwing it in. Well if it blows again, I'll try one more bulb and won't touch it. That said, I had a bulb last 2 years that I had also touched.
 
u might wanna clean the actual socket the bulb screws into.
Also if possible to partialy remove that socket, check on the back of it if the terminals are still fully seated. (may be accessible via panel on back of oven if not from inside)
from looking at google the socket has the same kinda little push on contacts that oven elements have.

maybe one has vibrated loose over time and arcs slightly.

obviously turn off the power to your cooker

BTW also if the socket the bulb screws into has a tab inside that sticks out a little the bulb is supposed to contact, maybe try bending it out a little, it might have got stuck in and not contact very well

Thanks, yeah it's certainly possible that the terminal connector/s might have come loose and need pushing back on. I'll turn off the power at the fuse box before attempting any cleaning and checking wires. I'll see how it goes with this new bulb first. It might blow at any time in which case I'll try one more without touching it. If that blows I'll have to remove some screws and slide the oven out which will be quite heavy, might need to get a friend in to help. But I'm hoping if this bulb lasts beyond a week I might be ok. The man in the electric wholesale shop said that some, like the one I showed him that had blown, look identical to oven bulbs but aren't designed for ovens as they don't have a protective coating. That said, I'm pretty sure the ones I got from builders depot were oven bulbs. But anyway, maybe this Eveready one will be better, fingers crossed! When I screwed it in last night I backed it off a little so it wasn't too tight.

I have the same problem in my Neff oven and always have. I've tried a few different bulb types even OEM, and they all blow within about 2 or 3 weeks. Always last at least a week, but then blow before a month.

Yeah that's not great. Are you replacing the bulb soon as it blows or not bothering sometimes? You've had the issue since the oven was new?
 
Am I the only one who had theirs blow as in actually EXPLODE? Was a nightmare, had to mop up all the tiny glass shards, at least they were pretty contained. Of note is that I just haven't bothered replacing it, all that's left in the bulb holder is a ragged bit of glass and the base of the bulb, I could probably get it out with pliers but why bother, it's been years :cry:

I gave up replacing them. Sometimes I would wait a couple of months and then do it. Same. Had the oven since we moved into the house years ago. It's good in every other regard being an older Neff.
I expect the socket internally is broken/perished/dirty and causes arcing, or, the socket is possibly mechanically loose causing vibration. In combination with my Mrs seemingly slamming the oven door shut constantly, this may not help. Or perhaps there is something electrically wrong and it sends the wrong voltage to the bulbs. Dunno. Would be nice to fix it.

We had a similar problem on a Neff oven about 15 years ago. The original bulb went after about 6 years from new and everything we got kept failing. Turned out the manual was wrong - it specified a bulb 5W higher than it should have been. Only found that out after some years though :rolleyes:
 
Worth checking the actual power connections to the back of the oven.

Our freestanding cooker started blowing bulbs, couple of months later and there was a loud crack and flash from inside the oven. When I came to disconnect it, the terminals at the back were burnt and covered in grease etc.

Just a follow up, this bulb (which I bought in July from an electric wholesaler shop instead of builders depot) has been flawless and has kept going for the last 3 months. It'll probably blow now I've said that!
