I have a weird problem with my range cooker. I cannot use the grill function unless the oven door is closed. I thought hmm i better open the oven door as i saw a little bit of smoke but then the steaks stop cooking and the got cooler. Now i have closed the oven door again and it has heated back up.

Is this normal or do i have a retarded cooker?

P.S. The manual is useless.

Lots od cookers are now continental style, and they work with the door closed, if the door is open then the butons and fascia can melt or burn from the heat escAping.
Can be a nasty housefire.

It is normal, some you have the door open, some you close it.

Weird, I never came across a cooker that could grill with the door closed because there is a button switch but that was at our factory.
Basically door open would be grill and door closed would be top oven.

I've only known grills to operate when the door is open. I thought the idea was that the plastic handle of the grill sticks out so that it doesn't burn and you can periodically pull it out to check how well cooked the bacon etc is.

Oven door on the other hand stays shut and you use oven gloves to pull the tray out.

A lot of modern ovens are designed to be closed when using the grill function, which is significant for a couple of reasons...

- It lessens the risk of fire, as accidents with grills can be quite common. So this is certainly why you tend to see them in new flats.

- The grill is also fan assisted, which is designed to cook more evenly, so you don't have to turn quite so much, plus also it helps stop spitting and smoke.

My one, I just open, pull the grill forward a bit with gloves and then flip food using tongs.

Glue the door switch shut ;)

Damn, I opened this thread to suggest that, too slow.

Although I'm not sure glue-ing it shut is the way to go. Seems a bit permanent. Just prop it down with something, like some dry wood, a petrol can, bottle of grain alcohol, anything you have lying around. :)

We had our inspection of our new house build last week and have a nice new oven/grill, the bloke specifically stated that most modern ovens require you to have the door closed now fr safety reasons.

Room temperature steaks in smoking hot frying pan, 1-2 minutes per side depending on desired cook. Ka-blam. Done. No fuss. No muss.

Grilled steak indeed. :p
