Hi there,
new member here but long time lurker :p.
I decided to post and share my joy and success :D My 48701gb had been running flawlessly for a year and a half but had started showing wierd green artifacts during any game or even watching a dvd etc :( after a while I put it down to bad memory after all my failed fix attemps.

Anyway I took a shot at the oven trick thingy I had read about on here and wud u believe it actually works! :D took the cards heatsink off and popped it onto a baking tray, slapped in the preheated oven at 210c just as i had read and left it in for 8mins. After it had cooled I put it back into the computer and booted. . . went straight into crysis warhead and no artifacts

Well the card has now been running for a month without a hitch so I am very pleased cos I dont fancy an upgrade until at least the next price war and then I pick up a 5870 or nvidia equivalent for a decent cost.

p.s I also decided to try the same thing on my old x1900xt crossfire edition which got returned to me from a buyer after I sent it in mint cond  that card wudnt even boot and it now runs fine too! oven trick f t w :D

It is kinda cool being able to fix complicated soldering just like that ^_^

Still, if they'd made the connections well enough the first time...

Why did'nt you just RMA it ? Its only around 2 years old and most brands have atleast that.

From what i've understood is that the 'Oven trick' is only a temporary stop gap. Useful if you need to buy some time but not something that will cure the problem.

I tried emailing powercolor and got no replies its been ages also I wud need to dig around for my reciept. Im just kinda impatient cos I dont have a replacement card to use as a stopgap.

Yea I heard it may just be temporary but after a month so far so good  I shall see how it goes like i said I am thinking about upgrading in a few months so I hope it lasts that long :)

Not sure mate, an awful lot of graphics chips need reballing at some point or another. I think it's reaching a limitation of the bga approach when dealing with large temperature swings rather than bad soldering. Thermal fatigue just bites harder here than elsewhere, as many owners of geforce 8600 laptops will resent.

I've heard this is all because they're not allowed to use lead in the solder anymore. That true?

I believe so. It's due to ROHS compliancy and the lead free solder cracks, killing some connections. Same thing happened on the original launch XBOX360's AFAIK.
