Over £200 for an oil service!!

Moral of the story, can't afford to keep that car running then is it really the car for you

You cannot deny that a full service history at the dealer looks better then Mike and the Mechanics on a 55 plate car you know the right parts and oil were used. As said if it's an old banger then it won't matter, your just glad it’s been serviced (or has it?;))

If you want to through money away then yes. For a car which is older than 4-5 years you are a mug to go to main dealer, just my 2p.

A main service on some BMWs are £500 quid (not including the faulty parts they find), you add those up and you are going to find you would have saved money even on the small depreciation for not have a full dealer service.

Could you possibly do me a favour? Could you stop offering opinion on things its quite clear you know nothing about? Only M Power cars have just services which are that expensive.

I use the main dealer for my servicing becuase they are barely any more expensive than the local independants.

Many dealers price match, offer discounts for older cars, allow you to reduce the cost by bringing your own oil, etc etc.

If its under warranty then you have to get it done by a garage i agree, but out of a warranty you are just a mug to continue using a garage.

As pointed out already that depends on the car and it's age. Would you buy a Varyon outside of warranty with the owners assurance he'd changed the oil himself ? If you're talking about spending (insert relevant value to you) on a used car you expect full service history and stamps from at least an independent, if you're haggling over a £200 hack with MOT, Tax, 4+ good tyres and what looks like clean oil and a filter change with a few reciepts then you're going to be happy with any paperwork let alone service history.

The oil service also includes the cabin air filter doesn't it which should be changed at this kind of interval (every 12-15k miles) normal garages doing just an oil and filter change won't know or even change the cabin air filter either I'd imagine.

Becuase its part of the service schedule, you can't just get it serviced but change the oil yourself. It's fine on a 500 quid Mondeo or something but many people spend thousands and thousands on cars.

Plus scrabbling about under your car releasing hot oil isn't exactly great fun, is it?

Is it sad that I do find it quite fun? :(

Out of interest, how old is your BMW and do you still use dealership services?

I think we both know that when you typed that you thought it was more than just the M Powered vehicles that had servicing costs like that :)

No, I knew it was just the high powered ones. I think my mate told me thats how much it cost for his X5.

A full service on my Mini Cooper is £300, so for 3 series (and higher) it must be at least £350.

It's 6 years old now (Though was 5 at its last service) and yes I still use my main dealer for servicing and repair work. It's convenient and reasonably priced. I do use an indy for some stuff if BMW's price is not to my liking.

You do?

Ah. An X5 is not an M Powered car. An Inspection II for an X5 V8 can be had for less than £500 from BMW dealers.

A full service on my Mini Cooper is £300, so for 3 series (and higher) it must be at least £350.

Must it?

Thats strange. Scothall Hampshire BMW quote £270 for an Inspection II for a 2002 325i..

I would go against the flow here and actually say that BMW's prices (if you are careful) are actually quite reasonable for what they are. I do a lot of work for peugeot and regularly see service bills in the £300-£400 region on junk like 206's! Ditto with vauxhall, one of my friends recently had his flywheel and clutch replaced on a 2005 vectra diesel, that came in at £1300. Cheap marques are not really any better than the prestige ones.

Exactly, even Vauxhall services on Corsas are not cheap.

not from a dealership nope :)

around and around in cricles we go.

Lets agree to differ, whilst i save £100 / service you can keep paying more. DO you work at a dealership by the way mr fox?

I am not just attacking BMW here, I am just saying as a whole you will pay more at a dealership no matter which company it is. AND you are better off finding a good independent garage to do the work if you can.

Thing is mate, i wouldn't buy a car without full comprehensive main dealer service history, i want to see bills right down to windscreen washer top-ups from the main dealer just as my car has from new. I want a previous owner where money has been absolutely no object whatsoever.

Independent services and DIY make me feel that the last person didn't treat the car as a money no object item, and as such i wouldn't want it as you don't know what else might have been skimped on which wasn't included.

If i wont buy a car like that, then i am sure others are the same and thus the market is seriously narrowed. The reasons i am finally stopping the main dealer stuff on my S-class is that it rarely leaves them with the bill still in 3 figures, and the car was subject to a catD total loss which i have repaired myself and thus the car now owes me virtually nothing. If that hadnt have happened i would have kept it up.

I am totally for this argument, up until a point. I think i said 4-5 years earlier in this thread but I suppose that varries car to car.

After this point I think you are just wasting money. I understand that a lot of you disagree so I will step down but I still think its silly to pay £££ to dealers once the car goes past a certain age.
