I have been saying for years that immigrants come to the UK for the socialist benefits. What this article or research does not show is that amount of immigrants that enjoy government benefits other than actual benefits, like free education, nhs and other facilities.

As i have said before, they don't come to the UK for the beaches or the weather.

My theory is that labour allows the low skilled immigrants in the country to saturate the voting public with unintelligent people who want free things from the government. This way the more uneducated immigrants that come in to the country, the more votes they will get.

The theory fall down when you really think about it, Immigrants are not allowed to vote.

If we're really going to be looking at a story which says "A look at a sample of 9,000 claimants of certain nationalities found 2% were illegally claiming benefits" (certain nationalities - how revealing...*) then it's probably worth also reading the second sentence "The estimates suggest workers born abroad are less likely to claim benefits than UK nationals.".

I know that dirtydog's argument is that no immigrant should claim benefits ever but that's hardly a realistic proposition so if it's 2% that are claiming benefits illegally then I'd be interested to see a comparison to the figures for non-immigrants.

*later on it says non-EEA nationals which still doesn't tell us a huge amount more except that they're not from the EEA.

HUNDREDS of learner drivers in Wigan had to have an interpreter sit in on their driving test because they didn’t have a strong enough command of English.

In the past two years, 257 people taking a car theory test at Wigan’s test centre required it to have a voiceover in another language. And 92 people needed an interpreter to accompany them on their practical driving test during the same period.

The figures, obtained following a Freedom of Information request to the Driving Standards Agency, came a month after the Government announced it was looking into ways to ban foreign language driving tests.

In Wigan, other than English, Kurdish (69 people) was the most popular language for a voiceover at a theory test sitting. This was closely followed by Polish (56) and Farsi (51). Other languages used included Turkish (seven), Urdu (eight) and Arabic (36).

What's the problem with that? A driving test is probably the only time you will ever have someone in your car barking orders at you that require an immediate response, which would require a high level of proficiency in the language of choice at the very least.

Edit: If you think someone shouldn't sit a driving test until they are fluent in English, are you happy for the government to give them benefits until they are? Not being able to drive severely limits a person's employment opportunities in many parts of the country.

Of course they can.

You can register to vote if you are:

• 16 years old or over and
• a British citizen
• an Irish, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizens. Qualifying Commonwealth citizens are those who have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or do not require such leave

All they have to do is register to vote and they can vote.
