Over paid Tax/NI?

Regardless of when you worked, I find it seriously hard to understand why they are taking 50% tax off you? If an employee starts work, and does not complete a P46 or forward a P45, the code 0T should be used on a Week/Month 1 basis (which will be 20%)

Keep us updated, would love to know why they have done that.

This to be honest, I'm certain there is no such thing as emergency tax anymore where they take a higher percentage until they have sorted your code out.

I have been on emergency tax since I started my new job in September, It's funny how the Government can take whatever they want from me and take their time to repay what they owe me, but when it's the other way about we are expected to cough up straight away. I was working for Hp for 10 years before I was laid off and I completed a P46 form, then sent in my P45 when I got it. I was out of work for 2 Months by the way. Might as well have given said documents to my 12 year old Nephew tbh. Inefficiency is the name of the game with HMRC.

Inefficiency is the name of the game with HMRC.

The inefficiency is there because the staff just don't care. At the end of the day, they're being paid to do their job, not to worry about people who have overpaid their taxes. It's a depressing state of affairs that such a lackadaisical approach to work is prevalent, which is in my mind and broader experience a common affair in many arrears of employment. These people can go home and sleep at night because such issues aren't affecting them, but their attitude would soon change is the roles were reversed.
