Over use of "mate"..

I tend to find pal, bud, chief etc all fall in to the same category. If I am not your pal, bud, chief or mate then I'd rather not be addressed as one, and if you do address me as one, then I am going to assume you're a bit of a cretin until proven otherwise.

But the OP was referring to his friend who uses it. I would say it to my friends, I wouldn't say it to any old random...as they are not, wait for it, a mate.

If someone did something for me on here I may use the term as like I said it's just being friendly.

"Cheers mate"

Judge me.

why, for people to even do this in the first place shows they're going out of their way to be nice to you.

I use it like as a really informal replacement for sir.

"Excuse me mate" to strangers to get past them for instance.

Or sometimes when referring to my friends to others
"I've got a mate who....."

"Mate" isn't that bad at all compared to people that actually say the abbreviated internet acroynms as just the letters. i.e. LOL as "ell oh ell" or OMG. Criiiinnngeee.

I remember my ex telling me how her dad couldn't stand the fact people he didn't know called him mate, like people on the checkout when doing the shopping etc.

I really couldn't understand why but it appears he's not the only one.

I just can't help myself, it seems rude when saying 'scuse me instead of 'scuse me mate. Perhaps it's my accent and 'scuse me sounds threatening :p
