Overclock 7950

Hey all,

Just received my 7950.

Was wondering what is the best way to overclock?... Through CCC or another programme?

As on CCC the voltage seems to be locked?

Download EVGAs Precision X or MSI After Burner, I also noticed on the bottom of the card there was a dual switch which I'm assuming is to unlock the overclocking etc, though I only noticed it when I was packing it up so I've not tried it

IIRC the switch was on 1 by default, so I'm assuming 2 is the unlocked bios?

Use MSI Afterburner though even with that you need to go into settings and enable voltage adjustments. You can overclock wiith the BIOS switch in position 1 but flicking it to 2 lets you push it even further apparently.

I just downloaded EVGA prcision x and when i press adjust voltage it says this device is not supported

Ok, personally prefer msi afterburner but totally down to preference i suppose.

Temps are debatable but personally in a single card setup i would not be happy with plus 70c.

As to volts hold off on them for now and just bump up the card and see how far it can go at stock, the 7950s tend to have quite a bit of headroom at stock volts.

If its the sapphire oc then position 2 bios switch will slightly increase volts and change auto fan profile slightly making it better for oc, but as ur talking about changing volts and also afterburner/ precision allow for custom fan profiles the switch is of little use, though no reason not to try!

try 1000MHz - 1050mhz on the core and 1600MHz on the memory with no volts...thats top end so il be impressed if it hits that. if not bump volts a little...maybe 1.15v (assuming i remember correct and stock volts are 1.09v)

1.30v is my line in the sand, but to be honest never bothered going past 1.20v as really.....what do you need the power for!?

Use Sapphire TRIXX.

Afterburner still not as stable but its fine as long as you just use the monitoring and disable the hardware and voltage controls in the options.

+1 for Sapphire TRIXX.

CCC is poor for overclocking. Only use that for changing 3D and monitor settings.

Trixx is good, but as I say i personally prefer afterburner, more features plus it looks better!

But for op either is fine, after all both are rivatuner technically.

Another +1 for Trixx, Afterburner installs too much waffle that is not needed. I use 4.1.0 as it has voltage control

Trixx 4.3 doesn't give me voltage control on my twin frozr 7950

any ideas anyone?

No, will try that after work. Latest version says added voltage control for 7950. Go figure :confused:

Afterburner gives voltage control but only let's me over clock to 1100 core, I.e. not enough :mad:

Really??? how random. on both points. my afterburner lets me oc my 7950s much higher...what version are you using? Beauty of afterburner is the ingame stats it can give you, dont think trixx has that yet, i presume it will eventually.

Go to the MSI Afterburner folder, go to MSIAfterburner.cfg, click properties and change it so that your user account has the ability to modify the file. Then open the file with Notepad and change these two lines to the following:

UnofficialOverclockingMode= 1
UnofficialOverclockingEULA= I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

Save the file, restart Afterburner et voila you should be able to raise the core clock all the way up to 1460MHz.

I generally run me MSI twin Frozr II oc 7950 at the following for 24/7:

1100 core, 1500 memory, 1.2v and never goes above 65c load. You might find that you need a lot of volts to any higher than 1100 core, my MSI versh needs 1.2v minimum at that speed, but all cards are different. I did suicide run at the following settings:

1255 core, 1500 (6000) memory @ 1.299v, fan speed 100%, never got above 70c and got this in heaven
