Hi, i've got myself an old P4 3.00GHz HT to have a play around with so i don't mess up my other computer.

So far i have upped the FSB and it's running at 3.23Ghz, tested with Prime95 and i had ThrottleWatch running aswell which showed 0% all the time.

I haven't gone any further because i'm a bit concerned about the temperature shown for 'PWM' in Abits uGuru software. It's showing 79/80c!

Just need advice on what 'PWM' is and how i can go about getting that temperature down.

If your temps are that high you might be best to hold back or get better cooling. Are you running on the stock intel cooler at the moment?

Ive no idea what PWM is lol, but do know 80C is waaaayyy too high. Dont like mine getting over 60 just to stay on the safe side.

Like Geckovich said, you probably need a better CPU cooler or more case fans to get air moving round the case better

The only motherboard PWM I can think of is pulse-wave modulation for fan speed (4-pin connectors), though I've no idea why that would have a temperature on it's own.

I would think that it's the MOSFET temperature, probably the one at the top of the motherboard (think the left hand side one is I/O MOSFET, and the top one is PWM MOSFET).

Maybe try getting new heatsinks, or a little fan you can strap to the existing heatsink.

PWM temp will be the temp of the mosfets next to the processor. Small cubic things that regulate the power fed to the processor. Based on their internal structure they'll be more temperature resilient than processors, but 80 is still starting to push it.

Depends somewhat on the board though, I think the ones on some graphics cards are rated up to 105 or so. The ones on your motherboard are unlikely to cope with this though. Best answer would be pointing a fan at them or mounting heatsinks, most of the premium boards these days have an additional one or two sinks beside the processor socket to cope with this

You've reached the exact same limit as I reached the same chip... although mine ran a bit cooler.

I don't think you're going to get much more out of it, and TBH it isn't really worth the effort surely. Let's say you get it up to 3.4... that's only 5% faster - which you'll never notice...

Thats fair enough, i was only having a play anyway.

Yes it is still running the stock cooler, i will have to look closer at the motherboard and and see if i can see how i can better cool these 'pwm's'

One thing i noticed is the temperatures from stock and overclocked didn't really vary much, but the fans did get louder! Maybe if i tinker with the way the BIOS deals with fan speeds i might get it cooler?

I did record the readings with 3dMark06, with the 3.2GHz overclock i managed an extra 30 points.......i'm guessing this isn't any difference at all?

Another question is this computer has got a 7600GT AGP card fitted....the stock cooler on this started making a racket so i replaced it with a Zalman copper cooler which also came with small heatsinks for the ram chips, how do i go about toying with that? Is there a guide on the forum somewhere for OC'ing a graphics card.

Thank for all your help.

Ash.

Seriously, the machine has so many bottlenecks for modern games and the like, overclocking it will not gain you anything of real worth...

I spent hours and hundreds of pounds trying to eak out my 3ghz P4...

I understand your point and i fully agree, this is just a machine i was playing with....i'm not really going to benefit from any gains on it.

It's just an experiment if you like...something of little value to 'learn' on.
