Overclock Bundle loses overclock...

I think I have a problem with my newly built system. When I boot up after a hard shutdown my PC does either one of two things. 1) The CPU returns to its default clock, or, 2) I get a black screen at bios. But, as soon as I turn it off/on (or soft reset) it returns to the normal overclocked setting of 4.0 GHz and appears to work as normal. This happens 50% of the time.

Also a stupid question: - Is it also normal for the CPU to be at its default stock when idle and throttle up to the 4.0 GHz overclock when doing intensive tasks? I guess this improves the life of the CPU but just want to make sure.

System specs:-

OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz @ 4.00GHz Max / Asus P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard / Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel DDR3 Bundle

Antec 1200 with Antec CP850 850W Modular PSU

Nvidia 8800gts 512 (Upgrading soon)

Samsung 22" TFT @ 1680x1200

IDE HDD 7200 rpm

Windows 7 64-bit.

Your help and advice will be greatly appreciated...Thanks.

Edit... very similar problem to this... http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18059718&page=2

The throttling issue as you say is normal.
Speedstep reduces the clock speed by reducing the multiplier when your system is idle. This helps save power and reduce heat.
If in doubt, post in the customer service forum at the bottom of the main forum page.

you need to post in here

it would appear that speedstep is in place.

we overclock with speedstep because it is a nice feature.
just because the pc runs at 4ghz doesnt mean it needs to all the time. you dont need a massive clockspeed for browsing the web

the other issues i can assist you with on the support forum :)

Thank you all for your feedback. I will post in the support forum tomorrow after confirming my bios version and etc.

Is there any other useful information required to make the support process easier?

Many thanks.

I wondered this but i'm sure that when my CPU is overclocked (from 2.4ghz > 3.6ghz) its more zippy opening browser windows and general windows 7 performance. (opening folders, pictures, searching etc)

Might just be in my head though

not really, just post your order details and try to explain the issue as fully as you can.

include screenshots if you think it would help :)
