Hey there, first post but I've been reading the forums for quite a while. I've been looking at overclocking my PC recently, and for some reason windows insists that my memory is running at 400Mhz when it should be running at 800Mhz, however the BIOS reads it at 800Mhz. Specs below, any help would be greatfully appreciated, even if I am being a noob about it :)

Intel Core2Duo E6300 @ stock speed (1.86Ghz)
Gigabyte GA 956P DS3 motherboard
GeIL 2Gb PC6400 DDR2 RAM @ 800Mhz (Reads at 400Mhz in windows)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

It is actually running at 2x its specified speed as it is DDR2 RAM, don't worry about it. Get CPU-Z, go to the memory tab and double whatever the speed is and that will give you your actual speed.

Ah I thought so, someone mentioned it but I just wanted to check, overclocked it now to 1.96Ghz, but it has upped the voltage from what I can gather, will that be doing any damage to the processor? I thought with an E6300 would go futher without having to up the voltage to it

Quick update, had it running at 1.9Ghz which is all it would take, 3dmark06 score of 8000, gaming on it all night, booted it up this morning and it wouldn't start, so I had to reset the CMOS again... :/

change voltages to manual, the motherboard will change the voltage on any size of overclock even if the extra volts arent needed

Awesome thanks for the quick response, will try again this evening limiting the voltage and will see how it goes and will post results here in case anyone is interested :)

Drop the Memory Multiplier to x2.0 and raise the memorys voltage to 2.1v (+3).

That should take the memory out of the equation til you get to ~3ghz.

In case anyone is still watching, I got it to 2 gig stable, it was the RAM that wasn't liking it as it's value RAM, but there we go :)

Gah ok about to give up, was running stable all of yesterday, wouldn't boot this morning for some reason, anyone got any ideas?

Damn thats mighty poor. :(

Can you run your memory unlinked to the CPU. Does it give you that option? You are the first person I have meet that cant get to 3.0ghz

Keep trying you know its worth it.

p.s what are your other voltages and what is speed of your ram?

cheers

The RAM is 800Mhz, not sure about running memory unlinked, overclocking is pretty new to me. As for voltages I was running 1.325 for the CPU I think, and auto for the rest. Thing I don't get it why did it run ok, then not boot the mornign after?
