My overclock has been stable for the best part of a year with very reasonable temps and an actic freezer pro keeping it cool. I turn on my PC tonight and displayed is that my OC has failed...

How do i go about working out why its failed. The system has reverted back to default settings ...

Asus P5k lifestyle
E4500 - Was @ 2.93Ghz, now 2.2 stock
2Gig PC6400 Black Dragon - reccommended voltage and timings
500W Hiper PSU

Any ideas??

Thanks

Something random like your heatsink having come a little loose or it being so clogged with dust that it's not dissipating enough heat?

Any other new hardware?

How old is the PSU?

the whole system is 14 montha old, no new hardware but i do have 4 gig f RAM coming tomorrow :)

System has a little bit of dut but not loads, ill have another look

Hey magicoi,

Do you disconnect your PC from the mains when you turn it off?

or do you just use the soft-off option (i.e the power button on the case)?

I'm thinking your Motherboards battery may be puny? :D

If you just use a soft-off then your gonna need to Load CMOS defaults and start testing your hardware just in case something is croaking!

PSU's have a habit of wearing down and breaking

Memory can go faulty over time too!

This happens to me from time to time, usually when the PC has been unplugged while I'm on it or there has been a powercut.

An interupted POST will cause the above as the board see's it as a failed boot and puts it down to your overclock. re-input your settings and test for stability for peace of mind.

Had this happen on mine a few weeks ago, walked into the room and switched on the system, powercut in our village at that exact moment:eek: switched the system back on to be met with overclock failed, quick check of my notes and straight to bios to reapply settings:)

Yeah, i do just use the power button and then flick the switch on the PSU itself but dont unplug from the mains.

I'll rework the clock tomorrow after work and see how that goes. I'll post back with the results.

Thanks for your input everyone! May need more help so if you wouldnt mind keeping an eye out for me i'd appreciate it!

Magicoi.

Hey Magicoi,

"flicking" off the PSU's rocker switch is basically the same as unplugging the PSU from the wall . . . . so basically it sounds possible that the battery on the motherboard that holds the BIOS settings is weak.

If you stop turning off the PSU's rocket switch for a few days you should find the system powers up fine. Dunno if the battery can charge itself up again or will have to be replaced (costs 70p ish).

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks Big Wayne,

Appreciate your help. Ill try it later on and see what happens.

Out of interest, where can you buy batteries for motherboards? Are they specific to PCs or can you get them from hardware / electrical shops?

cr2032.jpg

3 x MAXELL CR2032 (CR 2032) 3 VOLT BATTERY (BATTERIES)

I think I paid £2.00 inc postage! :D

Bizzare - i come home tonight, flich the switch and everything boots as it should, overclock intact!

Id built myself up all day abouth having to di it again as well!

Fingers crossed it will last. Getting an e8400 in the next few weeks hopefully so ill look forward to that now instead!

Thanks for your help and suggestions guys :)
