A GTX might be able to do the core of an Ultra if you're lucky, it will however, not reach the memory speed. That's special to an Ultra.
Not true.
I have a friend with 2 x GTX's flashed to Ultra speeds.

Those are GTX's in SLi running Ultra BIOS's with GTX timings.
My ( old ! ) 8800GTS 640mb can run at Ultra Superclocked speed on Water :

a lot of peoples GTS 640 could run at that speed, infact some peoples GTS 640's could run at 680+ on the stock cooler, mine ran at 650/2.2 then it fell over after that.

Got mine to 626/1490/2130. Cant get the shader clock to 1500 without crashing.
Makes you wonder why people are still prepared to spend £400+
on a card , when an overclocked £120 card will match it

Well a GTS 640 overclocked to same speeds as a GTX or Ultra wont match an ultra lol, the gap will be closed abit, but not fully and then you can overclock the GTX/Ultra and it increases the gap further more. And a, 8800GT is quite abit faster than a GTS 640 too when they are at the same speeds.

Well I think its more than an extra 5-10fps at higher res especially with AA, even my GT is a god upgrade for me from an 8800GTS 640 and 2900XT, performance is quite abit better especially in crysis.
5/10 fps were figures plucked from the air
I'm not blindly defending the 8800GTS 640mb , yes its outdated.
But it will run anything i chuck at it @ 1920 x 1200 quite happily.
If i had the money i would upgrade again , but i see little point at the moment what with the 3870x2 and the 9*** series Nvids coming out - prices will tumble in a few months.

Tom|Nbk has, and his is stable on stock cooling. 
I've left my BFG OC2 at 647/1666/2000 from 626/1450/2000
I can get memory at 2096 if core and shaders left alone but performance in synthetics and games was same as stock
With 655/1685/2096 performance actually dropped !
Biggest single difference for me was increasing shaders, I may try memory at 2050 and try again
Just make sure you use Rivatuner to set fan to 100% instead of the default 60%
Can't be bothered with the voltage or bios mods though, just playing COD4 at 1920x1200 4AA/16AF everything maxed out in every setting and it runs like a dream and looks awesome

648/1620/2052 here with stock cooler and XFX 8800GTX, been flashed like this for over a year.
From what i've seen it's rare to see a GTX match the memory speeds but allot of them will beat the core/shader speed which is where the real performance increases come from anyway.
