hi I have gigabyte hd7870 windforce 3 edition. I am having no success with oc at all and considering the supposedly great oc ability im disappointed. don't get me wrong, the gpu is not a disapoinment, its great but it will not oc. using after burner I can get the oc stable at 1170 core and 1450 vram with 1250 volts but find after burner gives me lots of annoying black screens. I uninstalled it and used overdrive, seemed stable all day at 1150 and 1450 with 20%+power, not one black screen gaming all day @99% use in crysis 2then its just froze in I player oddly. Any suggestions? with the price drop I intend to xfire this week sometime. should I just leave them stock? is it worth the hassle for such small oc`s? or do I just have a poor oc card above the factory oc. thanks in advance

I have the same card mate, its rubbish for overclocking. I have just left it on factory overclock now. Still plays all the games i want it to on ultra settings.

yes I think your definitely right. just checked it using asus gpu tweak and its plenty stable in benchmarks like kombuster at whatever set it to then will crash gaming on mw3 at only 75%use and crashed on bbc I player tonight. looks like stock its going to be. I think for the minimal overclocks can get out of it its just pointless trying. seen a lot of people with the 7870 at big clocks though so thought was worth a try

Here is a 3DMark 11 bench on the same card @ 1250Mhz / 1375Mhz.

There is nothing wrong with that card and overclocking it.

That's a good oc. Im about to buy my second on Wednesday, but not all are equal it seems because mine wont oc from the factory oc at all. I can get it to 1170 max core and 1450 vram using afterburner but afterburner gives me lots of black screen problems. overdrive doesn't give me any screen problems and was stable for two days gaming at the same clocks but crashed tonight watching I player. If you have any suggestions they are welcome

The stock clock of a reference 7870 is 1000 / 1200. the Gigabyte comes 10% already overclocked, mine will do 1150 on the core with stock volts, anything over that and i need to increase the volts, you might not have enough volts set for 1170, that is pretty normal for a 7870.

I use Sapphire TRIXX to overclock mine, it seem to work better with it.

I have just run the same bench as you at 1200 core and 1250 vram

passed no problem but like said, it crashed watching I player not benching and gaming

I will try that thanks. Im not happy with after burner due to the black screen issue alone. I am trying asus gpu tweak right now and that's what i clocked with for the comparative bench with yours. will try this gaming tomorrow then your suggestion. thanks for the input. its appreciated. no black screens to report using asus as yet either

Asus GPU Tweak: the volts would not actually take effect for me at all in that...

What Driver version are you using?

Thats what i'm using. I always use Driver Sweeper to remove any GPU driver before updating, sometimes bits of the old driver get stuck in the registry and cause problems.

brilliant thanks. I have cleaned out the old NVidia drivers using this tool. should I just clear all the amd out too then re, install? when I analyse the amd files there is literally a page full. not sure if all related to this gpu, never had amd before in this system and only completed original install and update to 12.8.

In afterburner select force constant voltage.

If that doesn't help then try making a CCC profile and upclocking the idle memory speed to the same speed as load by editing the file in C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\*profilename*

I set mine to the same as my overclocked speed
Edit the section in bold to match the one below it

<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6818&SUBSYS_25541458&REV_00_4&1CDA0A78&0&0008A">
<Property name="Want_0" value="140000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="140000" />

This is the the only thing that has worked to stop black screens for me when the card is idle.

will see if rid of the black screen issue with sweeping the drivers then will try this. tried force constant voltage before with oc and made no difference but will try again thanks. ordering my second card today so could do with being rid of these annoying issues
