I really got no clue what I'm doing, so pretty much need help for each step needed.

I'm trying to get my i7 860 to 4.0ghz, so far all my attempts have lead to PC crashing on windows loading screen.

Motherboard is Gigabyte P55-UD4
RAM: Super Talent DDR3 4GB 1600 CL9

Currently the cpu is sitting stable at 3.6ghz (172x21) with a Vcore of 1.3V, qpi of 1.25V. XMP is disbaled, memory multiplier on 8.0 (1333mhz), DRAM timings on auto (9-9-9-24), and DRAM voltage on 1.66V.

Now I've tried changing the cpu to 191x21, then increasing the cpu vcore to 1.35/1.4, then increasing qpi to 1.35V, but I always get crashes. I'm sure the problem is I need to make changes to some of the DRAM settings but I dont know what...

So yeah, need help figuring out the right settings to use to keep the cpu at 4.0ghz.

Thanks. I managed to figure it out.

Got the cpu up to 4.0ghz and memory up to 1528mhz.

Using cpu vcore of 1.35v, qpi 1.35v.

However my load tempretures were extremely high. Was hitting at high as 90 degrees in prime 95, but at least was stable.

Dropped speed back to 3.6ghz with 1.3 Vcore and 1.25qpi and load temps dropped back down to 60-65.

Is there any way to overclock higher than 3.6ghz without getting a HUGE increase in laod temps ?

My idle temps only went up my 5 degrees, but load temps took a massive spike.

You will have to get a better cooler,But you might be able to get it @3.8 if you take your time to balance volts.

I get 4Ghz with 1.35 and Qpi 1.32.

Are you on a stock cooler?

No, I'm using Megashadow with 120mm fan.

As far as I'm aware its the best air cooler on the market, or was when I bought my system.

MMMmmmmm. Thats odd. Remove the cooler and clean then refit useing Artic or some other high end Paste. There is no other reason why the temps are so high your not running massive volts. I have seen 860s @4.2 on Air

Give it a wash out in the sink and you should be loads better :)

Even on that video you linked, the guiy had watercooling on his 860 and was hitting 85+ degrees on 3.7ghz, albeit at 1.4+V.

I CBF messing with the cooler, id have to open my case which would void my warranty from the store or something. Maybe it just needs a better 120mm fan or 2 better fans.

The performance gains I recieved @ 4.0ghz in gaming benchmarks was very minimal, im not too fussed, im happy with 3.6ghz.

I was messing around settings some more today, can't get a stable 4.0ghz OC using settings lower than 1.33V Vcore and 1.32V QPI. Temps still too high.

Reverted back to old settings. Even at 3.6ghz, temps atm still reaching mid 70's. I guess my room is just very hot.

or the cooler needs a clean. Cant belive thay have stopped you doing routine maintenance thats just wrong. Bet if the CPU cooked due to dust they wouldnt cover the repair!!!
