Firstly I should say it won't be me doing the overclock as I don't know what I'm doing! It will be done at the build stage possibly by overclockers.....

I'll be getting a i7 3770k ivy bridge system and have been told a 4.5Ghz overclock will be quieter than a 4.6ghz overclock due to heat and fan speed. How much difference will the extra 0.1ghz make with my video editing? Worth the noise? Worth the extra heat? how much will I notice over the un-clocked CPU?

Advice appreciated

a lot of people are claiming to be sending their ivybridge chips back due to extremely high temps and are saying to stick with sb for now, you may want to have a look about before deciding on this choice of cpu

Wow. Really? So performance wise there's not much between sandy/ivy? Sandy overclock better?

So my specced Z77 motherboard will be fine just to transfer the sandy bridge to? Seeing as I don't intend to game I wasn't going to get a graphics card. How does the HD3000 graphics of the sandy compare to the HD4000 of the ivy?

Your advice is greatly appreciated

I am getting the exact opposite from what some other people are quoting mate, have a look at my thread here >>>

^^^^ temps look a bit higher now you are using coretemp......^^^^^

Anyhow, what is the general concensus about sandy bridge vs ivy bridge? I'm kinda swayed to the "newer" technology but don't want to if it could be an overclocking turkey. But I'm no serious overclocker, just want it set to a sensible 4.5/4.6 for a bit of a HD video editing boost

i think a more realistic overclock for IB is 4.2/3 few running @ 4.5+ but now they been running the chip abit they getting stabilty issues so looks like best clock is 4.2/3 but SB for a 24/7 overclock could easy get 4.6Ghz 99% of the time and running much cooler but having said that most ppl i have seen on here with SB have atleast 4.8 for the 24/7 clock

hmmmm..... Some things to think about.

Thanks for the replies

You can defo get the ivy up to 4.6 or 4.7, mines is at 4.7, you need a half decent cooler though, same as you would on a sandybridge, keep in mind that an ivy on a slightly lower overclock than a sandybridge, the ivy will still beat the sandy in most benchmark tests because of some of the new tech it has built into it I guess, so the facts say anyway if you care to look about you will see what I mean, but if you just want to see numbers, I.E 4.9 etc overclock then go for a sandy, but you only gain the numbers, nothing else, the ivy still out performs it.

Plus the fact you need an ivy bridge to use the new up and coming pci-e 3.0 graphics cards etc, a sandybridge cant do that, and the ivy platform is far far superior for ram, overclocking it etc, I mean, the other day I had my 1600 stock ram running at 1800 no problems at all, so theres a lot of if's, but's and maybes between both the chips, I think you will find in the end though that the Z77 motherboards and ivy bridge chips will be the way forward no sweat at all, remember these are just the first ivy chips, think about the ones that are coming, and then on the other hand, you also have a great chip in the sandy, so its up to you at end of day mate, I couldnt care less what you buy, I am only telling you what swayed me to the ivy and Z77 platform from my old i7 920, thats all, you will do what you want at end of day regardless.

Good luck and best wishes :);)

Cheers for your thoughts scotslad. High numbers are not my thing. A 4.5 overclock on any ivy using only built in graphics may be best for my video editing. I'll mull it over before taking the plunge

As stated above a 4.2ghz overclock is very easy on ivybridge just by upping the multiplier to 42 and leaving everything else on auto.
