Ok im gonna be getting a 8800gtx next week but im still unsure as to what to do.

I have a x2 4400, and ga k8n-sli-pro

Should i get a 8800gtx and simply overclock my cpu to say 2.6-2.8ghz (ordererd a scythe infinity cooler today). Or would i get better gaming results by getting a 8800gts 640, a core 2 e6600 and a whole new motherboard and ram?

Obviously the latter would still end up more expensive (not to mention fitting, clean xp install) with a worse gfx card.... Should i just oc my x2 4400,get the 8800gtx oc and upgrade the rest of my pc next year or something?

If you primarily game then the GTX option is best.

For an all round powerhouse the complete upgrade would be a wiser choice.

well the upgrade would be only for games. I just dont want to spend loads of money on a 8800gtx and have hindered. However do intend to play at 1280x1024 and a above with loads of AA and AF.

When you say "1280x1024" and above, what do you mean, exactly?

To be honest, at those resolutions, an 8800GTS 320Mb would be fine. A 8800GTX will only make a difference at higher resolutions such as 1920x1080 or whatever.

At those lowever resolutions, the biggest difference will come from the CPU, so I'll suggest - assuming you're struggling with your games (not through skill, of course) - that you go for the CPU upgrade instead of the graphics card... it will be of greater benefit in the long run, too.

But if you have to buy a graphics card and it HAS to be a GTX, then who are we to stop you?

Why not just see how you go with your overclocked AMD and 8800 GTX ? If your games play well then no need to spend anymore yet.

I had an x2 3800, and got to 2.7 stable with a bit of extra voltage and a Freezer 64 Pro. I'd put one of those on, bump up your volts and see if you can get a bit higher (you should be able to!)

Take care when overclocking, with the X2s the stable limit and top limit seem close together, so you may hit a brick wall with overclocking quicker than expected.

I got around 25s in SuperPI to 1M, whereas a Core 2 Duo E6300 of my friend's will get around 14s when overclocked to 3GHz.
