Overclock Ruined my PC?

I got my a8v deluxe to 266HTT, it was the pci-e version though

Think I corrupted my windows boot partition earlier coz I upped the CPU frequency by 9 i.e. 10x9 That's what you get for being impatient! Am I right in thinking newer mobos have the pci/pci-e/HD speeds locked by default or is it something you have to set in the BIOS?

New mobos have it as an option in the BIOS.

That's the A8V-E Deluxe There was a A8V (plain) released later & that had AGP/PCI lock but not PCI-E

Try getting hold of a cheapo 40GB HDD with a basic install of Windows for overclocking.

I did this and it is great peace of mind knowing if the installation gets trashed, so what. Restore the image and abuse it some more. When happy my OC is rock solid I unplug the cheapo drive and plug my real drives back in.

I don't know anything specific to your mobo, but you should be looking to lock the PCI bus, not the drive itself.

If its 'Async' then its locked What you don't want is 'Sync' because, an increase to CPU & the PCI, etc will also go up which is not good. Your board is very 'modern' & PCI lock problem shouldn't be an issue

EDIT: Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe, if you set AI Overclock to 'Manual' (which you should be using anyway), there's an option to adjust PCIE Frequency. Set that to 100 & its locked

I don't think this particular revision of the motherboard came with a PCI/AGP lock, meaning that everything would overclocked with the FSB. High AGP speeds were good for 3Dmark2k1 but the high PCI speeds weren't good for Mr. Hard Drive.

And as suggested up there somewhere...

DO NOT LET YOUR COMPUTER OVERCLOCK ITSELF. IT'S LIKE LETTING mavity DRIVE YOUR CAR DOWN A HILL: NOT A GOOD IDEA.

Thanks HP7909, I've double checked that the pci-e is set to 100, thought I'm sure it was set to that when I buggered it up before! I'll have a play around with it and will see how I get on.
