I have a p4 3g 478 cpu with a asus p4p800-x mobo in my rig, Iv just turned my overclock option up in the bios to 30% and the core at1.5v!, Now the cpu is running at 3.9g! . Is this good  and is it possible to achive higher than this if so how do i go about doingit?.

Switch to manual in bios, and set the FSB, and Memory speeds yourself. Will take more work than automatic, but you'll get a faster result in the long run.

How far will you go, who knows, depends on your cooling, and luck.

It wont last @ that on air for long!!

Back it down to 3.5-3.7 for safety. Just because it reaches a high clock speed does not mean it can sustain it for long.

You run a real risk of damage as the skt478 P4s always struggle to get much higher than 3.6-3.7 on air. Even with exotic cooling they are just not designed to go that high.

Remember once the air temps start to go up again in the milder weather that CPU is gonna fry!

Temp is around 40c when idle and using my zalman 9500!, Which is good i think, c!an anyone reasure me?, As i dont want it to go bang with in the next days!. :(

depends if its a northwood or a prescott....

run CPU-z and tell us what core it is..... by the sound of it its a prescott.

1.5-1.55 is the max i would put through one..... and go for the max !

It's a 3gig prescott from my old dell 3000 in a new asus mobo!. What does this mean in overclocking terms for me?, Good or bad?,On cpu-z it's running at 3.900 mhz, 260 fsb and 1039.9 mhz bus speed!.

thats quiet good going.... while you have cpuz open what stepping is it ?

what i would start by doing is........ setting what you have now, using the manual option in the bios (as opposed to auto)

so set
fsb:260
vcore 1.5
mem (you dont say what you have) but put on a divider 5:4

and work from there.

Got a hiper 525w psu which is on medium the setting and 2 gig of ram, 2 sticks of 512mb cosair xms 3200 and 2 sticks of 512mb nanya from the old dell 3000, i have set them to 266 fq in the bios!, whats a divider and how do i set it?. It says #1 in the stepping box what does that mean?.

Yeh it says e0 in the revision box below the stepping!, That a good thing?, Im new to the exciting :D world of overclocking so you need to help me out peps!. ;)

Yippe doo!, :D Made some manuel adjustments in the bios and now it's pushing orunning at 4050.00mhz according to cpu-z!, I set the fsb to 270, Is it safe for me to gamble and turn it up higher?, Also were do i find this mem divider to switch it to 5:4, will this make a difference with the ram i am using? Thanx. ;)

Good result for that CPU to be sure.

As your finding out the secret to a good P4 overclock is raise the FSB as far as it can go. For my system 3:4 gives me best results @ 800Mhz (unoverclocked). When ocing I can hit 1:1 1100FSB on cheap value ram and get 4.5Ghz on air with stock volts. Dont wanna push it any further without a better cooler as on stock it is fast enough. Mine will do 1600 FSB with DDR2-800!!

On recent Asus mobos the mem divider is automatically calculated by the mobo when it multiplies the FSB x CPU Ratio.

Ive got a C0 revision, is that good? Also its a shame my IC7 is undervolting

Im not gonna cry if it isnt cos i got a great price on this.

The E0 is a very nice stepping, I had a P4 3ghz E0 478 that did 4.1ghz and then became limited by motherboard and I have just picked up a E0 Celeron 3.0ghz to go on my 775 AA8XE and thats at 4.1ghz and climbing :)
