Something based around a E6600, DS3 and some 6400 ram with 4-4-4-x
Would go with a E6300 however I believe you can stretch yourself to a E6600 with £1200.
You could go the whole hog and go for a X6800, but it isn't viable for that price.

Depends what you need to fit into that budget besides the main components (cpu, ram, mobo, gfx).
If you only need the main components, get e6600, ds3,asus p5b deluxe or maybe even a 680i or r600 would be good, 2 gigs of good quality 4-4-4-12 ram (the geil is pretty good for that price), and you could maybe even squeeze in a 8800/ refresh depending on when they come out.

As above, depends what was needed. For the whole package just get the best you can for the money. For the base unit only, I would go for a cheap conroe (e6300, DS3 etc.) over a more expensive setup and pocket the change.
If you had to spend it all, 680i mobo, E6600, 2gb geil or corsair, 1950XTX or 8800GTS, nice case and psu.
