Overclocking 5770 fail...why?

Thise numbers do seem awful low to be unstable, but it's possible the chip on your card is a lemon, so to speak. When I had a 5770, I managed roughly 890mhz core using an old, crappy case. Stuck it in an Antec 300 and could hit 980mhz core, so it may well be your case airflow that's at fault.

As linked earlier Thermaltake Shark is my case with its 2 default fans (one next to hard drives, one blowing at the cpu), then there is the cpu cooler fan that is facing the card (not sure whether it sucks air or blows it toward the card to be honest - never checked as I've never had issues with the cpu temps). The side panel of the case also has (unfiltered) holes around the place where the card is.
