Overclocking 5850 Crossfire

The increase in the Heaven benchmark seems far too high to be solely down to the overclock.

Core speed +16.4%
Memory speed +10%
Heaven benchmark +51.3%

It seems unlikely.

But my testing has been done under fair conditions too, I don't get it?? Am I missing something?

Something odd is going on because those results don't stack up.

Try the benchmark with the settings in this thread and then you can compare the results to the those shown in the first post.

The only difference is 1050 resolution and 4X AA

i5 750 @ 3.7Ghz
Stock 5850 CF @ 700/1000

i5 750 @ 3.7Ghz
5850 CF @ 815/1100

Same as a GTX5850

That looks about where it should be for overclocked CF HD 5850's.

And I assume you mean it's the same as a GTX 580.

So if you run the same benchmark with the graphics cards at stock speeds what do you get?

The score should probably be around the 1350 mark.

Updated my last post. The jump isn't as big this time, just goes to show how much AA can effect performance  Still doesn't explain how steve1873 isn't getting lower results than me though???

I'm gona say that I think there was possibly something up with your benchmark run. I don't know what exactly, but your fps were through the roof. I get a score of about 1670'ish with my 5870's on 1680x1050 with 4xAA, so that is slightly higher than you posted which you would expect, as you would expect me to get a slightly higher score than you at 1920x1080 with no AA, which is why I originally thought there was something odd with your results.

As you can see overclocking doesn't make the huge difference seen in the first scores you posted.

Something was wrong with those scores of 1537 and 2325.

I would suggest the 2325 is much too high for some strange reason.

I ran the benchmarks again at 1080P with AA off and I got the same results as before, its AA thats killing the score. Still BF3 runs better when OC'ed :)

It doesn't matter if it's AA killing the scores or not, they're relative to each other.

1680x1050, 4AA, 1447 at stock and 1562 overclocked. A 7.9% increase.

1920x1080, no AA, 1537 at stock and 2325 overclocked. A 51.3% increase.

Those results make no sense.

Just ran mine at 700/1000 and scored 1430 odd/57.0fps

775/1100 yields 1524/60.5fps

1680*1050, same settings as the bench thread

Mine do up to 1000/1200 but sound like leaf blowers :o

I'll run more later if I can be dragged away from the drink ;)

How did you determine your max is 1000/1200? Is there a program apart from AMD's own Autotune that can test clock settings and find the optimal one?

Lots of testing! I flashed both of them with a custom bios, though I think more could be squeezed out of one of them with less conservative volts and better cooling. My launch 5850 is a monster but the one I bought this year the is very much on the edge at 1000/1200. Again more volts and watercooling might help but don't really need it. Run them at 800/1100 most of the time, custom fan profile, top card max 86c, bottom 79ish in BF3

Could you link me to a guide or to that custom BIOS please?

I used an Asus bios from techpowerup and Radion Bios Editor the up the limits, there is fan profile editing in there too but I use Afterburner for that in software. It's very easy to brick your card if you do it wrong, both of my ones are reference design. There is similar techniques for later design cards but I don't think they fare as well, ymmv! :)

Hmmm my tinkering side wants me to give it a bash but my sensible side says 'no dont do it'... damn you sensible side!

Out of interest what spec rig have you got and what settings are you playing BF3 on? Im playing at 1080P everything on Ultra and HBAO off. Runs constant 60fps (as VSYNC is on) but dips to 40 when things get very hectic and sometimes when I zoom in with scope.

Ultra textures, medium shadows, ambient occlusion off, motion blur off, vsync off, everything else whacked up

1055t @3.5GHz, 4GB RAM (upgrading to 8 when I get round to finding some barginous :))

Anyone had any performance problems since the game's update this week? It's turned into a massive stutterfest for me now, when it was lovely and smooth before this update.
