Overclocking 5870...problems?

Hello fellows,

I've never overclocked anything in my puff, but last night I thought I'd attack my ATi Overdrive and slam all the sliders to the right.

From what I recall the stock clock speeds are 850/1200 and I popped them up to 900/1300.

This happened after a short while of gaming:

I've seen dotted around the forums that people have had their 5870's to numbers around the levels I set mine at.

The same thing happened at 900/1250 so I've just reverted it back to stock clocks until I actually know what I'm doing.

I'm not asking for advice to help me overclock, merely posting as I'm confused about what has gone wrong technologically.

Thanks for reading,

you're not likely to get the memory stable at that speed (and the core for that matter) without some sort of voltage adjustment.

Try 900/1200

I'll give that a run for a while.

Ah ha, diving in at the deep end I see.

Thanks for the input guys, I was just wanting to play around with it and I don't mind too much if I kill it. But I'll certainly be leaving the soldering iron that I don't own in the shops for now.

Your gpu cannot do those overclocks at stock voltage, hence the image you got . Better to adjust one slider at a time then test. Use afterburner, and you may have to adjust voltage slightly as other poster says.

yes you just leave it and it will say passed or failed thats just the catalyst check, but really you need to stress test it properly to see if its stable also dont adjust the voltages massively or you will definately brick your card you wont get massive perfromance increase out of overclocking anyways but since your using this to practice i assume take it slowly on the increases and then stress test, can be quite a long procedure but if done well you will see decent gains.

I've just downloaded MSI Afterburner and MSI Kombustor to fart around and see what's what :)

Thanks guys, I'll pootle about with this for a while and hopefully I won't end up with a paperweight!

I wouldn't really bother with the ram at all as the real gains from overclocking GFX cards are on the core, RAM is really just a bonus. pretty sure you can change volts with software with the 5870 anyway :)
