When I got in to overclocking I had a 2500k on a z68 board but now due to certain circumstances I have an asus p5k-e and q9550 with some patriot ram (800mhz I think). Most settings are the same or similar in the bios but I don't want to push it given it is quite an old chip. I currently have 3.4ghz stable (8.5 x 400) but haven't messed around with memory, so can someone please tell me what I can realistically expect from this combo? thanks in advance

I've only recently gone the other way (though came from a Q6600). I would say you should be able to get 3.6Ghz providing you have adequate cooling and temps are sensible.

Slacken off the RAM timings, drop the CPU multi and take the FSB as high as you can. I think that board should be good for almost (if not in excess of) 500Mhz FSB which will open up your memory bandwidth nicely.

Once you've done that, start re-raising the multi and then tighten your timings.

A Q9550 should hit around 4Ghz. My old one did 3.6Ghz at stock voltage and hit a max of 4.13Ghz. Have a good read of this thread. A load of us put all our settings in there for just about every clockspeed from stock to 4.13Ghz. Keep in mind though that we all had P45 boards.
