Overclocking 8x00 Shader Clocks Independantly of GPU Core Speed

have you tried ati tools with the shader clock as i benched my 8800gtx at 1600 in 3dmark06 3 times of the trot and all was ok but when i did a artifact test in tools it would only go to 1480 then i would get errors every so many seconds,

I have that also, ati tool was very sensitive to the shader overclock and would artifact like crazy until I wound the clock rate right down.

I'm not sure if I'm being overly paranoid about ati tools test.

Yeah I did know about the ram, forgot that. However you can almost get the ram on a GTX up to the same speed.

And I thought the Ultra just guaranteed A3 core. You still have a fair chance getting a GTX with an A3 core.

I found exactly the same thing. I could clock my GTS to 670/1800/1020 and it would fly through 3DMark no problem but turn on ATI tool and it artifacts all over the shop at anything over 620/1600/1000. No artifacting evident in 3Dmark or any games at the higher speeds however.

You say you have passive cooling on it. Get a quiet 92mm fan on the passive cooler (use cable ties) and you will see a vast improvement in temps with hardly any noise. You should then be able to clock quite a bit higher :)

Not bad from this card :) Keep trying harder :D

I have gone off ATI tools as well. The max I can get ATI tools to without artifacts is 621 core and when I try 650 it just freezes yet if I use rivatuner to set clock at 650 I can loop 3dmark06 for hours.

Disregard Atitool really, artifacts every 20 seconds or so for me, but i can play Crysis, Bioshock, Company Of Heroes & CS : S for hours without artifacts, plus 3dmark06 will loop with no problems, so really, i trust that more than Atitool for now.

Not sure if i am right or not ati tool stresses your card more than games do.
I certainly see higher temps when running the ati artifact test than i do when
playing games. I think this is the reason you won't see the same problems
in game as you do with this test.

Probably, but Atitool is really bugging out on me, won't even be stable at my old clocks which were stable for over 2 hours in Atitool, don't trust it too much right now. And my CPU clock isn't prime stable either, have to give it a bit more voltage for it to be, but it runs everything else i throw at it, and that's what matters really :)

May be true but that doesn't explain the hang with my system. At idle temps as soon as I set clock with ATI tool to 650, my system hangs. Set it with rivatuner and all is fine even when running games. I can't even get to the ati artifact test when I try to set it at 650 so can't be heat related and can only be buggy ATI tool.

Shame cause I used to rate it.

Ive just installed Rivatuner and had a play with the shader clock.

3Dmark06 - High quality - [email protected] - 8800GTX

600 core 1406 shader (default) 1000 mem = 13363 marks

600 core 1700 shader 1000 mem = 14171 marks

Overall, a nice free boost :)

Im still going up with my shader clock too, and played crysis without any glitches.

Nice overclock but is 600 on the core all your GTX can do?

aaah, so i was being a bit of a fool, i had even searched the threads... (i may have got a bit mislead by some threads though :D)

Cheers dude!

You weren't the only one. I was scratching my head for a few days as to why I didn't have a shader slider till I found the answer on here
