Hi all,

I have been having a go at overclocking for the first time without the use of Gigabytes Easytune6. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H, a Intel 2500K, 8gb XMS3 ram and an articfreezer pro rev2 running in an Antec P180 case with an XFX 850 modular PSU.

With Easytune6 running prime 95 for 2 hours my max load temps were 79C, 82C, 83C & 80C & at idle in the low 30s.

I then proceeded to up the multiplier in the bios to 46 with everthing else on Auto& I ran Prime 95 for 2 hours again. The max load temps were now 83C, 86C, 88C & 84C although in the bios (touch bios) it says core temp 72C.

Now these temps look quite high to me, but it seems pretty stable (temps got with Coretemp). I was wondering if I ought to lower the overclock as these seem too high?, reseat the cooler or get another cooler, I have been looking at the Thermalright Silver Arrow (not sure if it will fit though) but if these temps are acceptable I will be happy with this overclock. Any tips welcome

thanks

Will

Not all CPU's are equal. Some will run 4.6GHz with next to no voltage and therefore be cooler. You have not listed what your voltages are so not able to say if your temps are in line with what they should be or not.

But with the voltages set to auto I would imagine the voltages to be 1.34 1.36 on the 46 multiplier. And that does make your temps a bit high. But it does seem that you have two applications open at the same time. TouchBops and Coretemp. Only use one. As they will be in conflict and I would trust neither of their readings.

That is correct and pretty much what it should be voltage wise on auto.

Please check your cooler mount as those temps are way to high for 1.33 volts. Do not use too much TM paste when you mount a cooler. The TM is just there to fill the microscopic gaps in the IHS of the CPU. Not to be applied like butter on a piece of bread :)

If you have TouchBIOS installed then you do not need ET6 and in fact ET6 will cause problems with your set up. Uninstall ET6 and only use TouchBios.

Hi,

I have uninstalled ET6 and will try reseating the cooler tomorrow, when I seated it i spread it on pretty thin & then skimmed it with my credit card like someone at work advised, I will try the rice grain/pea sized method as I have seen advised on here.

Thanks for the replies

Will

After reseating it with a pea sized blob of thermal compound the temps were
84C, 89C, 91C & 86C, this was after 3 mins so I think I need to do it again. So I did it again & after 5 mins the temps were hitting the low 90'sC. This seems far too high. Another cooler could be the way to go?

I will go to around the £50 mark, the quieter the better, preferably not water, having water in my case just seems wrong, but if its the best & cheapest option I would consider it. Its an Antec P180 case & I was looking at the Silver arrow but unsure if it will fit.

Hi,
I have dropped the Vcore by 0.100V and after running prime95 for 1 hour @4.5ghz the volts are 1.25V and the highest core temps are now 76C,80C, 82C, 78C which is an improvement. I might try and drop it a bit more later. It seems stable so are these temps & volts OK or would you say drop it a bit more?

What you do need to understand is that your temps will never be as high under normal use. Real world if you like. So my advise is this. If it ain't broke why fix it.

They look fine for the cooler you are using :)
