Hi,

im thinking about a move to PCI-E and am not really sure which intel's C2D to get, the cheapest i have seen is the E6300, though it has only 1.8GHz but looking at forums and reviews people have managed to take it to 3GHz+ speeds. Now my question, for someone who has never overlcoked a processor before, is it an easy thing to do with the C2D processors, by that i mean do i need some special software or something, or is it like straight forward as ocing a graphics card. I know the risk of permanent damage but so many people do it, so is it worth it?

Thanks in advance

It's definately worth it, it's extra performance for nothing after all! Don't pay too much attention to the 1.8GHz stock speed either, the E6300 is faster than a good few of the AMD chips that have a higher stock speeds due to it's efficient design.

If you want to get the best out of your overclock, it is a lot of trial and error and it does take a fair bit of patience. That said, if you pair a Conroe chip with a decent mobo & ram, you could likely get a decent boost in speeds just by upping the FSB.

To achieve the 'better' overclocks, other components need to be up to the job - what I am saying is don't go for a cheapie mobo and RAM setup and still expect great overclocking results - my advice would be to research a decent mobo (search the forums.....maybe a DS3, P5B or similar is a good start point) and go for some solid RAM to match
