Sup peeps, I have a Dell computer and was planning on overclocking my processor (Pentium D 820 2.8GHz), but since Dell does not allow you to do this through the bios, I was wondering whether anyone knows about any apps that are trustworthy and safe that I could use instead.

Help is much appreciated.

There are a few apps that let you overclock from windows, but to be honest it wouldnt be worth it, as far as i know they just increase the clockspeed and you have to apply the settings everytime you reboot, and they don't really allow any fine control. you could try systool http://www.techpowerup.com/systool/
i think you can find instructions somewhere. i'd be very careful with this. don't change any of the options you aren't sure about. Also, you might want to run prime 95 for a few hours at the overclocked speeds, to make sure the pc is stable.

Welcome to the forums :)

A good program for windows overclocking is clockgen. There are some versions (for amd boards at least ) that allow vcore control too. Another good one is 8rdavcore but that is only compatable with some motherboards.

Your options for overclocking will probably be very limited if you cant up the vcore, northbridge voltage or vdimm settings :(

i have pretty much the same processor (only the 3.4Ghz one) and mine's a DELL, there ain't anything you can really do with it =(

welcome to the forums

the dell psu s are not the same as standard atx, i think the wiring is different - different colour wires goto different holes on the atx connector compared to normal atx psus....from what ive seen of older dells anyway I expect it is the same with newer ones as well.

You could buy a new motherboard and PSU and then there is a posibility the PSU wouldn't fit the Dell case so then you'd of course need a new case too.

try to find the PLL your motherboard uses by googling the model of motherboard or take a look on the motherboard for a little chip that says ICS xxxxxxxxxxx on it or similar.

once you have the PLL download CPU Cool or SoftFSB - small programs that allow on the fly overclocking within Windows but are reliant on the PLL so the program needs to have the correct PLL for your motherboard in order for it to operate at all.
